We've been invited to dinner for our friends daughter's 17th birthday. She is notoriously difficult to buy for... not into makeup clothes or sports. She is very academic, loves mathematics and hopes to do medicine in future. Any suggestions please??

Money. It's not imaginative but it's sensible and will allow her to get something she really wants.

Thanks @Aquamarine1029. The family is very well I'd struggle to think of an amount. Maybe a gift voucher...

If she's genuinely into maths, try this website:

My 17 yo daughter sounds similar and very much liked the binary birthday candles and the weirdly shaped dice.

iPod docking station
Trainer socks with eco water bottle
Pack for eco/green toiletries such as toothbrush and toothpaste
Highway Code and St. John’s ambulance first aid book
Ted baker purse
Fondue set
These are a list of popular gifts to give or receive with my children and friends.

I hate buying presents for teenagers. It's nearly impossible.

Pretty stationery, notebook, diary etc. One of those fancy water bottles with a cool design. Candle. Any good?

What about an experience? Even something as simple as vouchers for the cinema? Or something like an activity she could do with friends or her mum?

Thank you @Panticles !!! Bought the St Johns first aid book... it's interesting and got loads of illustrations. Great idea!

Nando's voucher. Seems to be a universally accepted gift around here grin
