Teenagers

My teenager is throwing a tantrum and so far it's lasted 4 hours

Because she is grounded for the weekend.
This is a full on laying on the floor, throwing cushions and screaming so people walking past the house are stopping to look.

How much longer can she go on for ?
🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️

That’s not usual teenage behaviour surely? Even when pissed off.

Livestream it to her FB.

Four hours of screaming and tantruming? Flipping heck. The grounding would continue by a week for every half hour.

She is just 16. I gave her money to go to the cinema Friday and she was meant to go while I was working and be back by ten.

She ended up going just before I finished work and I couldn't get hold of her then messaged at 11 saying her and her friend had got the tram as buses had stopped and were now stuck in a dodgy area.
I ordered a taxi and paid for it and then walked her friend home and instead of saying sorry and thanks she was really rude and told me to fuck off moaning at her.

So she's grounded and I'm the devil apparently.

I'm tempted to record even if it's just to show her when she's finished.

It's not like her at all but putting it down to pmt and GCSE stress, finding it hard to deal with though.

Grounding is a crap punishment for a 16 year old!

You should’ve offered to loan her the money for the taxi and told her how she can pay it back with jobs.

Grounding solves nothing

I'd film her too, I've threatened my teenager with that and it (sort of worked). Problem is, she is just like a toddler afterwards, sort overwhelmed by it and ashamed and needing reassuring... luckily it has only happened a couple of times.
So...ignore during, comfort afterwards and then talk about appropriate sanctions after that.

Ugh I never grounded mine because I didn't want to set eyes on them when they were irritating me so much.

I would threaten to film her, too - that's really terrible behaviour.

Grounding a 16yo is a rather alien concept to me, but then again, I can't imagine a 16yo having a tantrum.

I presume that there are some sort of SN involved? If so, do you have strategies that can help to deal with the meltdown?

elephantoverthehill · 26/05/2019 17:55

Well she will sleep well tonight.

Shockers · 26/05/2019 17:55

Carry on as though nothing is happening. Eventually she will wear herself out. You will not get through to her whilst she is so angry.

Once she has finished, and slept, then talk to her.

No SN at all, I have another daughter with SN and this isn't a meltdown or anything.
She's just frustrated that I won't back down and she can't see the issue I have with her constantly swearing and been rude.

All you can do is ignore

I am ignoring she seems to be calming down now anyway or getting her energy up for the next round Shock.

I'm surprised her voice is lasting out this long. I hope you've left her alone and are ignoring her?

Report
MrsPinkCup · 26/05/2019 18:17

Yep I'm totally ignoring, will talk to her tomorrow.

I'd have gone out and left her to scream to an empty house. Ridiculous behaviour.

blimey

I'd be a bit worried she'd be ill after all that.

16 & four-plus hours of actual screaming tantrum?
When was the last time she did this?
