Recommend me personal care items for teen boy!

As title says really!

Ds has asd and needs constantly prompting for personal care stuff.

Would like recommendations for good facial wash and deodorant or anti perspirant.

For example liquid or soap, roll on or spray?

Thanks!

DS is yr9 and they have being made to have showers now after games. Spray is popular. Lots go for Lynx or DS currently has a Slazenger deodorant (from Wilko or similar).

The Bulldog facial scrub is good. Can get it in Boots & reasonable price.

Thankyou. Spray doesn't seem to stop the smell - although goes some way to mask it!

Does your ds use this alongside an antiperspirant?

DS2 has ASD and similar prompting is needed.
Really important they can tolerate all the products with any sensory issues they have, as if they can't nothing will induce them to use them.

He likes: Clean and Clear foaming facial wash and spot zapping cream (Boots/Superdrug) with a fresh, soft facecloth to wash it off.

Head and shoulders 2in1 apple shampoo. This is a really good find. It washes and conditions hair so no need to do both. It keeps dandruff at bay and it smells nice. If he doesn't like apple scent they have a similar product that just smells clean.

But I also keep Batiste dry shampoo for when he's forgotten two days in a row and has stinky, greasy hair. He's OK with it.

Lynx is vile. Avoid it. I got him Hollister Socal which is fresh smelling for use as deodrant and aftershave.

He prefers an electric razor as he hates the scraping feeling of a wet shave. It's not as close but better than a wispy teen beard.

He's dreadful at brushing teeth, so I always get him electric toothbrushes as dentist says they help. and a mild spearmint toothpaste - usually Aquafresh - as he hates the stronger ones.

Forgot to mention antiperspirant. You can now get ones that last 48 hours. I just get the mildest scented one I can find as he hates the strong scented ones. Dove Men are good.

DS has a roll on antiperspirant but he doesn't like the feel of it - he went down the line in Tesco smelling them all. He doesn't have asd but did dislike all bar a couple. Ended up with a Sure one.

Ds has oily skin and uses Simple face wash.

Lynx is popular but when it’s not on offer I just pick something random like Adidas in a can.

My son likes the L’Oréal men expert charcoal face wash.

Proper bar of soap (not shower gel) we use imperial leather

He also says ‘right guard’ antiperspirant on after a shower is the only thing that touches body odour.

He has a bag of lynx ‘black night’ in his school bag for during the day. (Smells great but not antiperspirant)

Thanks all.

Yes ds is awful at teeth brushing and co ordination problems don't help. He uses an electric brush with aquafresh!

I'm usually in the camp of plain hot water for face - except he can't use a flannel due to co ordination - well not well enough for it to count!

I have some simple face wash so will try him with that.

In Aldi today I got him to look at 48 hour antiperspirants. They had 3 different ones. I bought all 3 and we sprayed at home. He tolerated 2, but only liked 1. Third made him gag as some smells do.
So gag one went in bin! I've got one he tolerated and he has one he liked.

He's not at shaving stage yet. He's 13 and going through puberty - not sure how long after this they usually need to start shaving?
I've often wondered how he cope with a razor and about an electric one.

Such great advice here - Thankyou.

Oh and ds LOVES the apple 2 in 1!

Tesco also do their own brand one too now which is cheaper and just as good!

The Sam Farmer unisex stuff for teens might be nice. They seem to have put a lot of thought into it.

I find this is the best deodorant for dealing with wetness and smell. It is generally a bit pricier but lasts longer although I have just seen this offer so will be off to Boots tomorrow.

DH and boys x 3 use this (and I use the women's one since becoming very wet underarm (pre-meopause) and I have no issues now.

My sons uses the Acnecide facial wash as he prone to spots and finds this is the best preventative measure although he has the cream too for outbreaks.

Mine love the Gorilla Dirty spray from Lush. Much better than the horrible Lynx stuff.

DS uses Nip+Fab Teen Skin pads on his face morning and evening.

We really struggled with DS washing his face properly as the spots of puberty started to become apparent.

Equally toothbrushing was done in a lacklustre way unless we sat watching him do it.

The answer for us was gadgets....

We bought him an oral b electric toothbrush that connects to the internet and “charts” how well you’ve been brushing. It also came with a little device that sits by the sink that tells you which quadrant of your mouth to brush and for how long and alerts if your pressing too hard or not hard enough.

The other gadget was a Clarisonic to wash his face with. It’s been a godsend. His skin has improved dramatically.

Getting him in the shower/bath is still a daily non negotiable chore but these 2 gizmos have worked in him doing what he needs to do.

You’re very welcome - pricy items but definitely worth it.

He also uses Mitchum anti perspirant - deodorant alone just won’t cut it :-) I also worry for all the poor teachers of teen boys who must be surrounded by a fug of Lynx and teen BO!!!

As an aside we got the toothbrush from Amazon - we noticed they sometimes do deals on them and we got it for half price. It’s worth looking out for.

DH was impressed with the Clarisonic but was too stingy to buy one for himself so bought a Hangsung (again from Amazon) it’s massively cheaper than a Clarisonic but he’s had no problems with it and it seems to be just as effective.

Oral-B Smart Series 6500 CrossAction Electric Rechargeable Toothbrush with Bluetooth Connectivity and Smart Series Powered by Braun (Packaging May Vary) - Ships with 2 pin UK plug https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00LMDWOEO/ref=cmswwrcppapi_xy57zb4TSRNJS

This is the toothbrush we bought. Forgot to say you can download an app for it to chart progress and get real time feedback on how you are brushing.

From memory we got it for £70 on an amazon deal of the day.

Darth - that toothbrush idea is inspired. Thank you. Will suggest it to DS2.
