Bras - best places for 'difficult' teen sizes?

Dd's had a bit of a growth spurt and suddenly has boobs. We went to get her properly fitted at Peter Jones and it turns out she's a 30D (on the tightest hooks).

We picked up a couple of bras in the shop but there wasn't much choice in her size. She really needs a black one as well but we're struggling to find something. It needs to be non wired, not too lacy and not frumpy. A lot of ranges seem only to start at 32 and the teen ranges stop at a C cup.

Any pointers gratefully received

This one from Debenhams? It is non-wired and not lacy. It is a little padded but if it's like the padding in the bras I wear from Debenhams it isn't shape enhancing, just smoothing for under t-shirts.

EBay! You wil find hundreds of cheap bras I just searched the size and loads came up in decent bras like panache and Freya

Any reason not to have an underwire? A properly fitting one is prob as comfortable as non underwired. Freya have nice modern designs.

That's rubbish. As long as the bra fits properly and the weird aren't sitting breast tissue it's fine.

John Lewis have some on their website, I've definitely bought 28d from them before.

Marks and spencers, their Angel ones for teenagers definitely go to a D and they've got non underwired ones not aimed at teenagers as well.

I'm a 30D and I get mine from m & s. They do 2 packs with black and beige plus some nicer ones too. It's such an awkward size!

Bravissimo!!! Go down to 28 back and up to something like a j cup. Going into a store is great they fit really well. I started there when I was 14 now I'm eighteen with a 30FF cup. I love them

It sounds bizarre for a teenager (mine rolled her eyes at me) but Bravissimo, if you have one locally, are absolutely delightful with teens and will stop at nothing to find a bra that really fits.

Before that, DD had bras from john Lewis, who at least did them in her size, but Bravissimo really sought out ones that not only fitted but made her feel good.

The non-underwired thing is a myth. As long as the wire is on the chest not on the boob, and you get the fit checked regularly as she grows, it's fine. Badly-fitted underwires are bad, certainly, but well-fitting ones are fine. She'll be growing for years more, and the underwiring allows a degree of support and shaping that non-underwired simply don't - and this has reconciled a very sensitive DD to being what she sees as 'huge' [She's a dancer. Most of her dance mates aren't in DD cups]. DD used to find the band under the cups used to roll up in hers - 28D from JL - and that was hugely uncomfortable.

The thing about the underwires is utter rubbish. So long as the bra fits properly then it's absolutely fine.

Bravissimo and BraStop are great for bras in "awkward sizes".

I suspect the issue with teenagers and wires is that they won't always be well fitted, they jump sizes as they grow, as in they grow in spurts like they do everywhere.

DD got measured in John Lewis but their range was too limited. The teen bras at M&S are pretty good. We ordered loads online and Dd found something she liked that felt comfortable. DD is a size 4-6 - very slim and she wears a 30D - I'm sure it's not a proper adult size 30D because I wear a 30 and there is no way we have the same chest size.

orange I'm surprised she's come up with such a big cup size too as she's very slim and all her dresses are 4 or 6 - she really doesn't look like she has big breasts

We got her a couple of the John Lewis non-wired t-shirt bras but they didn't have black in 30D and it's sold out online too

As the band size goes down, so does the size of the cup. So a 28D is really the same as a, for example, 32B, but as the band is smaller so are the cups. So it doesn't necessarily mean she has to have big breasts if she's a D. It's confusing this, isn't it?

Anyone have any idea what I do with an 11 year old with a 38, maybe 40 band and an A/B cup?, she is overweight, (being dealt with), but also has a very broad back and is only 4 foot 10, she's in a 36 with a bra extender at the moment. I can't see her tolerating a wire, she has sensory processing issues.

Just as a question - what is her actual under-bust measurement in inches?

The fact that you say A/B cup (so only a very small difference between under bust size and over the cups) suggests that, perhaps, she has been fitted using the old 'add 4 inches' type of approach, rather than one that uses the real under-bust size as a starting point?

Search MN for bra measuring, if that sounds familiar. You may find that, with a proper fitting approach, her band size goes down a bit (and the cup size goes up), so it may become easier to find nice bras to fit her.

To clarify, a 38 or 40 band size, if the bra is fitted correctly, would mean an actual under bust measurement of 38-40 inches.

DD's teen bra at 30D - has a much smaller band than my bra at 30F - there's no way she'd even measure as 30inch around her chest - she's probably closer to 25 inches.

Nibbled, your DD probably isn't a 38-40 band. I'm an adult size 18-20 and I wear a 36 band. You can check out Boob or Bust, or Better Bra Campaign for info on how to size properly.
