My son (15) just bought a backpack today from 'FootAsylum'. They are so overpriced for what they are though but they need to fit in and getting the right type of bag is part of this. It was a 'Hype' one, he's had it before but there wasn't much choice. It was reduced to 20.00 so not as much as I have spent in the past. I think it's this one or something very similar.

My son wants something like this but I think £50 is very expensive for a school bag.

After trial-and-error of several brands, all three teenage boys all have North Face recon bags. They each walk 17 miles a week, and the North Face recon is comfortable, doesn't hurt their backs, durable (lasts at least 2 years) and can fit a water bottle in each side pocket.

DD started Y7 with a Hype backpack, but it was slightly too small and the lining started flaking off after the first term. She now has a Jansport bag (still showing no wear after 18 months).

In terms of fitting in, the boys around here carry a variety of backpacks & messenger bags in all sorts of brands. Mostly dark colours and plain.

Thanks TheSecondOfHerName I'll have a look at both those bags, never heard of Jansport before.

My DD likes a handbag type bag which I really don't like and would much prefer her to have a backpack style bag but as per usual it's all about fitting in.

I know at my daughters secondary school they are not allowed handbag style bags. All have to have a backpack.

Dd had hype last year which lasted well and was good quality. This year she has Adidas as it has more pockets and bottle holders on the sides. She isn't one to follow the crowd though and hates the handbag thing.

I wish DDs school would ban the handbags definitely stop the arguments/strops in our house.

One None branded from Amazon

Northface backpack. The previous 3 branded sports bags we had were as useless as a paper bag in the rain ☔️ and all his books we soaked.

Backpacks. Cheap ones we get on Ebay, street market or local drugstore or pretty owl-flower things. The kids use them until they wear out (wear thru anywhere, but especially at bottom).
But DD just got a Himawari and it's miles better quality than others. Worth the extra cost if lasts longer.

My DD has an Abercrombie one and it is on it's second year. However she is just going into Yr7 so may come home from school wanting a different one in the next few weeks.
She catches the bus from the village so less walking than she was doing to school last year.

The dreaded two words, almost as bad as football & boots.

I have lots of bags but DD has a school satchel. DS has an old bag pack of mine, Trespass I think. I'm sure it's blue with black & white stars. Happy enough to buy one, but he likes filtering through my backpack collection.

Do try Millets plus other camping / walking shops as they do loads on offer, which is how mine have reproduced, as I always take a bag out & hand bags aren't my thing.

Here you go: www.shopslike.co.uk/similar/Go_Outdoors

If you don't have a store local, check the sale section of Go Outdoors, Blacks, Decathlon. At one stage there used to be quite a few.

For girls, they have cheapy bag shops too in most shopping malls.

Jansport.

DS's Big Student backpack (which really is huge) is still good for use after 5 years, though he has opted to semi-retire it and go for the smaller Superbreak for 6th form. One of the discussions on buying it was what design he would be prepared to live with all the way through uni, as on past performance it'll be indestructible!

Expensive upfront, and I have cast longing eyes at much cheaper ones, but on terms of 'use per £' the Jansports have been brilliant.

DD refuses to consider them and has a Mi Pac. Not bad at all, but has lasted 2 years and is looking a little worn, so definitely less robust.

I think it is more girls who are fashion conscious, where we live it's cheap bag heaven, only thing is you compromise on quality the less you spend.

The one DS has cost me £15 from SuperDry but a relatives rabid dog bit the oh so important tag.

Dd has had Hype for two years. Some girls have handbags but her friends all seem to have backpacks. They have quite a long walk, so a handbag would be uncomfortable

My ds likes his converse messenger bag and my (pre-teen) dd loves a 90s style leather rucksack.

DD has decided on a River Island bag and DS has now moved his attention to a Superdry backpack.

My daughter has this vans backpack. Bit pricey (£30) however she's had it since Year 8 and she is now going into Year 11. Vans do loads of different styles/colours and it is big enough for everything she needs.
