My teenager's working dilemma - model job vs previous commitment - thoughts?

My DD 18, is currently taking a year off before university. She heads off in January for a 3 month placement with a charity and is currently doing a variety of jobs etc. To gain experience she also started volunteering at Oxfam who were impressed with her enough to offer her a temporary paid assistant manager position to cover the Sundays leading up to Christmas. At the moment she needs to work for them for about 12 hours a week.

However she has just been offered a modelling job in Bali, Indonesia through a contact of ours. She is not currently on an agency's books (although has been asked to be) and so she wasn't actively seeking out this sort of work. She will be away for 11 days (25th Nov - 5th Dec) which will mean she won't be able to fulfil her time at Oxfam during this time although she can work for them when she returns.

However the modelling job is very well paid (a lot more that she will have made at Oxfam over the 12 weeks she will have been there) and of course a wonderful experience for obvious reasons.

She wants to go but feels terribly guilty about letting Oxfam down - in particular the manager who has been very kind to her as she will leave them short for the 2 Sundays that she is away.

Just wondering what other people's thoughts are on this opportunity...

Life's too short to turn down an opportunity like that imo

Can she find them an extra pair of hands for those days? A friend, her mum.....

Is the modelling opportunity definitely legitimate?

If it is legitimate, I would go with the modelling Job!

Is it legit? Are flights and accommodation paid? Is there insurance for working there? Are any visa issues sorted? Time to get any jabs and/or tabs?

If evidence of all those and still in profit - then do it, offering to make up the hours on return .

I think she should take the job in Bali but you need to ask some questions, as outlined by previous posters.
Who is offering? Where would she stay? etc etc

Would you be able to cover the Sundays for her? I'd want fullest details of the job in Bali too.

Goodness me, how exciting.
Take the modelling job. Sit boss down at oxfam and say, thank you so much for managers position, but this opportunity had arisen that I just couldn't refuse and .... if you want me to step down/ work these hours up until, then those after .....

Hopefully boss will be thrilled for her - Only a fool would be disappointed for a young girl to get such an opportunity.

Sorry had to get back to work! Yes all legit - they are people who we know very well who represent a brand that we also know. They will be travelling with her to Bali and overseeing it all. All expenses are covered and she will have all the injections etc as she is in the middle of sorting these out for her trip in January. There are absolutely no negatives or concerns about going - plus she is very very keen. It is just her concern about letting down Oxfam, it really has worried her and she likes the manager as I guess she was so pleased that had put so much faith in her. She knows it leaves him in the lurch.

Hmmm, me working for her...I work full time already and have 4 other younger kids to support - thinking this is just not going to be a possibility although I probably would enjoy it very much!

However it was pointed out to her that in a a year or so, her manager at Oxfam would not remember the situation while she could 'kick herself' for the rest of her life for not taking this opportunity...

Thanks for the comments though - like her I am programmed to be overly concerned about keeping my word and not upsetting others and therefore are not good at weighing up these sorts of situation!

Definitly the modelling job. What an amazing opportunity. I'm sure the people at Oxfam would think it too good an opportunity to turn down and totally understand.

Can she offer extra before/after to make it up to them /person covering?

I would just be honest with Oxfam - say she doesn't want to leave, but has been offered this fantastic opportunity. If she gives them the dates, they may be prepared to work around them.

I can't believe that her manager at Oxfam would not understand so I would get her to talk to them and defo go with the modelling opportunity. That she has got involved with helping Oxfam is great; good on her for using her time so productively. If I were her Oxfam manager, I'd be wanting to keep in with her in case she is available for work in the student vacations.

I can barely believe she is having to weigh up the options! Run like the wind and enjoy a carefree life. She'll have plenty of time for responsibilities later.

She sounds like a lovely girl that she is even worrying about letting Oxfam down. She should of course explain the situation to the manager but tske the modelling job. Good luck - hope you'll post pics after!

I think she should hand in her notice at oxfam thank them very much for the opportunity and run to Bali Grin. She can say to oxfam something else has come up and she will be away for 2 weeks so isnt able to commit to the managers job
