Birthday gift for niece turning 12?

What do I buy my lovely niece? She isn't into fashion, music etc, quite a sheltered life. Parents won't allow her a mobile or a tablet. Want to get her something that will make her feel grown up?

Hi Mouth, what about some nice but inexpensive toiletries? My 12 year old likes those small bottles of bubble bath/shower gel/shampoo in different fruity scents from the Body Shop. They make her feel quite grown up without getting into the toil of ridiculous grooming that girls/women are pressured into.

Or book tokens if she's a reader. My DD also likes vouchers for places like ASDA where she could exchange them for music, dvds, bits of clothing, stationery. People sometimes feel reluctant to get vouchers but if you're young and don't have access to money they are a good way of giving you the luxury of choosing for themselves.

not sure of your budget..this was a bit of a blowout..i bought my goddaughter who was 12 recently and not into girly stuff ..a day being a junior zoo keeper at london zoo.

Depending on your budget, maybe a one-off cooking class/ workshop? There's usually plenty of them specifically aimed at the 12-16ish age group, rather than younger kids.

Some of them tend to be fairly pricey (or plain off-the-scale blooming extortionate!), but with a bit of research, you can usually take advantage of special promotions etc. and find something affordable. Or perhaps club together with another gift-giver?
