Selfish teenager - she's really upset me

DD1 is 18 and we've known for a while that's she's become very selfish but her behaviour this morning has really upset me.

DD2 is going to America with the school at the end of this year and we've just had the final invoice (airport taxes etc) and it's a lot more than we'd anticipated. It needs to be paid within 3 weeks and then a week later I need to tax the car so added together it's a hefty chunk of money.

We're incredibly lucky in that we can shave a fair bit off the food shopping and I can stop smoking so we can get the extra $$ together within the time.

I (half) jokingly said to DD1 that we might end up eating pasta every day for the month and she went nuts. Ranting about how it's not fair, that DD2 always gets her own way and gets everything she wants.

I agree that DD2 is pretty spoilt, but then they all are - if they want anything and it's reasonable and we can afford it then they can have it. We pay out so much each week for the kids but according to DD1 it's not enough. DD1 also seems to have forgotten the fact I'm paying most of the $$ for her to go on an overseas trip for her uni degree.

Is this a phase? Classic middle child syndrome or have I completely messed up as a parent?

You haven't messed up- some teenagers go through an incredibly selfish phase( speaking from experience) .
Your dd wants you to feel bad. Don't .

It's just a phase - remember teens live in their own special universe of 'me'!
They sometimes need reminding of all the things they have benefitted from, whilst others have gone without.

I do think YABU in only giving pasta though, tell her you are sorry and will alternate it with beans on toast and jacket potatoes too grin

18? Bit old for a toddler tantrum!

Remind of what she is getting and ignore.

My DD is 21 and still believes on occasions that she never had anything compared to DS (18)

Sibling rivalry.... You can still see it on MN boards from the adults!
