What on earth am I going to do with these children I have created over the summer?

I have two dds, one 15 with a moderate disability and one 11. They can't be left alone together.

My mum used to help out with childcare as did a student friend of ours; mum now suddenly is very ill with cancer, completely out of the blue, and the student is job hunting.

Am completely clueless as to what to do with these children whilst we're at work. Playscheme type things tend to end at 12 years old, or include activities that dd1 can't do or which dd2 can't be arsed to do.

Anyone want to come over to ours for the summer to drink coffee whilst my kids play Minecraft or watch Big Bang Theory repeats whilst ignoring one another?

No thanks Capster! But if I lived near you I'd think it a good little job for DD (18). Are there any older, responsible, trustworthy teens you could pay to help out?

We had similar - usually a mix of leaving them to get on with it whilst taking half days to eek out our annual leave (which is easier of course if there are 2 parents) and coming home at lunchtime as they were just getting up/off the computer.

Any chance of getting another student, or older school pupil in? Summer camps are one option, but it depends on how flexible your hours are (they didn't work for us as we don't have flexitime)

Are there no holiday schemes for the one with a disability. Around here there is a play scheme for children with disabilities which goes up to age 18 - although it only runs from 9.30 - 3.30.

An 11 year old would be catered for by any number of holiday schemes - mostly run at sports centres.

But trying to get them both into the same scheme would be difficult.

We are lucky in so much as the local sn school runs a holiday club for children upto 17 (both sn and nt children, not just for children who attend the school). I love the fact that nt ds can mix with sn young people and he can go even though he is 13.

May be worth checking if a local sn school runs a similar holiday club.
