Teenagers

How many pairs of footwear do your teen boys have?

DH has just tidied out the utility room where my 2 teen DSs keep their shoes - he is moaning as there were 19 pairs in there - he then started moaning and asked them to weed out what needed to be binned as grown out of or worn out - they weeded out one pair each and told him that one pair of sandals belonged to me. That left 8 pairs each which he was still moaning about when I got in from work. So I reviewed what was there, they each had:

  1. School shoes
  2. Indoor gym trainers for school
  3. Walking Boots (Scouts/DofE)
  4. Walking Shoes (Scouts etc)
  5. Ordinary outdoor trainers
  6. Nicer trainer type things for going out in
  7. Sandals for Holidays
  8. Crocs for camping/swimming

So, okay they may manage without both Crocs and Sandals but otherwise I didn't think that was over the top? They have a pair of wellies each in the garage and don't do sport that needs extra footwear such as football etc.

Added to his moaning was that the 2 pairs of worn out ones then had to be pulled back out the recycling as he is taking them to do some water sports this week so they will be useful to use those for that before dumping them......so his clear-out amounted to me getting handed my sandals to put upstairs.

Then he decided they only needed one jacket each but that's a different story..... :o

Smart going out trainers
Football boots for club
Football boots for school
PE trainers
Crocs for garden, beach, camping etc
Wellies
Everyday trainers

Sounds similar to ds (17) only he has no school shoes as such and flip-flops rather than crocs. He also doesn't own a pair of wellies!

Thanks, that's what I thought - its probably because they have such big feet (11) that makes it look so much :o

Honestly DH has far more than they do, he has 4 different pairs of walking boots alone (kept in garage as size 12) I don't think he really gets that they are not small children anymore. We've had the same argument before as I would always keep their last pair of worn out trainers for things like canoeing or scout activities where you don't want them to waste good ones and he just never really got why I did it - but then he wasn't the one having to go buy them. he is just lucky we didn't have girls.....

DS 15 owns 2 pairs of shoes. Shoes and Trainers. He can borrow wellies from his Dad if needed. He gets an allowance and is expected to buy all his own clothes from that - he prefers not to spend it and so is very rich but has no shoes. The ones he does have are long lasting, good quality. DD has about 15 pairs, and nicks mine but hers all cost very little and do not last long.

We were never really a welly family - more walking boots and snow boots - I am not a welly fan. They both needed them though for a school trip to the trenches - they were bought big and worn with thick socks and welly socks so still fit if required.

That seems a lot but football boots add to the tally for ds

He has:

School shoes
Suede style fashion trainer type shoe/boots for smart
School trainers
Old trainers for playing in at home
Football boots
AstroTurf trainers
Wellies

DS2(18) has about 12 pairs of shoes, but according to him he has none! Hmm

DS1(20) has a thing for shoes and trainers. He has about 30 pairs, it could quite well be more because he lives away most of the time and I have no idea how many pairs he has there.

Ds2's (13) feet are still growing. He has just gone from a 7 to a 9.

So atm he only has 1 pair school shoes, 1 pair trainers, 1 pair hi tops.

I suppose in addition he is going to need a pair of football boots, a pair of indoor trainers for pe at school, and a pair of Welles.

He doesn't go walking, and won't wear sandals.

If messing about in the garden he'll wear my crocs (which are a bit too small), or dh's crocs (which are a bit too big).

Ds1 (19) has left home, and his feet stopped growing when he was 15.

I estimate he has about 25 pairs of shoes and trainers. Ño sandals or crocs, or Welles though as they aren't trendy enough. Usually wears boat shoes or converse!

So, 8 pairs that include school shoes/trainers and ones that are specific to a sport/activity seem to be about the average - it's not like they have 8 pairs of trainers in various colours to match outfits or anything.

Rose's son wins on the minimalist front :)

I am hoping that at size 11 and age of just turned 15 and coming up 14 that their feet have stopped growing - no change since last summer really - it means the bigger ones I bought in the sale and put away will have to be sold on as they wont fit and DH doesn't want them :)

Mine has 8 pairs. He's 17 and his feet have stopped growing (hopefully).
Best black
School black
Trainers
2 converse
Crocs as slippers
Flip flops in swimming bag
Timberland for Winter
We have a small family shoe stand next to the front door for daily pairs/slippers. One on, one off. All the others go out of sight in the shoe cupboard. That's the theory anyway. I once put a Post It on his door: "Put your goddam shoes in the goddam shoe cupboard!".

8 pairs is fine Wanker.

We have no Crocs, wellies or sandals here, either, mainly trainers. When DS1 goes out it takes about half an hour to decide what pair to wear. He wanders round in front of mirrors with a shoe from a different pair on each foot saying "which one looks the best mum?" One of these days he's going to go out in a mismatched pair!

Hormonal mine are not fashion victims - I still have to specify what they have to wear if we are going anywhere nice. Otherwise the standard wear is jersey shorts and t-shirt - socks only put on if they are going to put on trainers and then put on everyday trainers. Then for school it is school uniform and shoes and gym ones in bag on gym days - currently school holidays so those are not being worn.

Sgt a shoe rack and cupboard doesn't really work for us, we have a straight, narrow hall and also their feet are so big that they don't really fit into standard racks or you get so few pairs on it's not worth it. DSs keep theirs in the Utility and DH and I keep ours in our room - occasional wear ones are in storage under the bed, daily wear ones are in wheeled storage boxes in the walk in wardrobe.

Two DS's and a DH all have size 11/12 feet.
DC have
1 pair of trainers used for sport/gym
1 pair of smart black shoes for special occasions
1 pair of every day fashion shoes (converse type) worn pretty much all the time, all year round. (No longer at school).
1 pair of walking boots.

There are communal wellies.
At least their feet have stopped growing but packing to go away is a pain as a pair of size 11trainers fills half a suitcase.

WankerDeAsalWipe · 14/07/2015 13:10

Yup Squirrels they certainly do.

DSs cant really wear the canvas converse things or high tops which is a pain as they do pack down smaller. They both have really high instep so find those uncomfortable plus they cant get the high tops on without unlacing them down really far - they also can't wear any kind of slip ons which is a pain as DS2 takes hours to tie his laces still. :)

Oh bloody hell, just the thread title is enough to make me break out in a sweat.

Every 4 months DS throws a sulk, around insisting his feet have grown or old ones wore out, anyway he needs new trainers. I lose the will to live & eventually buy him 2 pairs (one for school PE). His actual size fluctuates up and down. He's not obsessed with any other clothing, just trainers. We keep his old ones hoping they might be spares for me/DH/younger brothers.

Ds(17) has black school shoes, black going out shoes, tan going out shoes, black converse, white converse, grey high tops, hockey trainers, outdoor trainers, indoor trainers, flip flops, walking boots and wellies. He probably has more "smart" shoes than.average as that would be his "look" even with jeans plus he worked in Next so wears smart clothes to his part time.job (plus he gets clothes allowance/discount!)

At the other end of the spectrum Ds15 has a pair of school shoes( now with a hole in the soles) , one pair of trainers and a pair of walking boots.
If he goes out anywhere smart I am reduced to flinging the trainers in the washing machine and hoping they will be presentable.
He has no interest in clothes at all and rarely leaves the house.....has to be dragged screaming to the shop for school shoes once a year.
He is size 12+ which makes it all the more difficult.
Sad

Timeto mine have no interest in shopping either - i just order things in for them to try at home....and they still moan! 12+ is hard though. DH takes a 12 and finds that Clarks 11 is really big and fits him fine.

Timeo we are the same as you. My ds refuses to shop for anything. He has school shoes and a pair of trainers. That is it. He would wear the same clothes for, well, months I think if he could!

I don't think I have ever gone shopping for clothes or shoes with my now teenagers (boys). Okay, maybe shoes when they were little and needed measured and properly fitted.

I buy stuff on-line and if it fits and they like it then it's kept otherwise I send it back - I suppose I should stop doing that and make them go themselves, that just seems like even more hassle tbh

Last week my DS (age 13 size 11) had two pairs - trainers and wellies. The pup managed to get hold of a trainer to transform into a mule style, and so on a very hot day he only had wellies. He now has replacement trainers and a very nice pair of boots in his wardrobe for spare / smart events. Which he will probably grow out of far too soon. It's hard to buy online as he has very wide feet.
