how the hell do i get dust/mud/grass stains out of them? vanish and hot wash? top shop stretchy ones say 40 degrees on label. surely 60 wont kill them?

I know this might be a bit off topic but I couldn't find a topic for 'uptight 50s housewife'.

I have noticed quite a lot of scoffing at the 50s housewife. My mum was one, no washing machine, fridge, money or television. She kept the house sparkling and us well fed. There was no central heating, just a coal fire in the living room. Her hobbies were dressmaking, embroidery and knitting. What is there to laugh at in that list? She also worked part time from home. She was no house wifey in her attitude either. Comments please but be respectful of a hard working lady.

A friend told me years ago to use supermarket own brand liquid specifically for colours. I have tried Tesco, Asda,Lidl and Aldi's versions and they all work the same. Pour some neat onto the stain, rub in a little, leave for 5/10 minutes then put on your usual machine wash with your usual detergent. It might need repeated a couple of times but usually works perfectly the first time.

Blimey 6cats! confused grin

Vanish is definitely your friend here!

SpongeBobJudgeyPants Sat 04-Jul-15 16:21:20

If you have tried all the above with no sucess I would be tempted to use a mild bleach solution on the stains. I know clothes don't last as long, but who wants to wear stained clothes?!

TurnItIn Sat 04-Jul-15 16:26:55

That was random 6cats.

So - sink of hot water with a washing powder capsule in, a big scoop of vanish, leave to soak overnight, then into the washing machine. I never wash anything over 40 degrees and my whites are PRISTINE, MOTHERFUCKER.

TurnItIn Sat 04-Jul-15 16:27:26

Er - mad autocorrect! Apologies, you're not a motherfucker OP.

elderfloweriver Sat 04-Jul-15 16:28:19

This thread is unintentionally hilarious!

Turn I love you! You have made me laugh out loud grin

bearofnothingness Sat 04-Jul-15 16:28:21

TheImprobableGirl Sat 04-Jul-15 16:30:15

Hahahahahahahaha how many times must you have typed pristine motherfucker in order for it come up on autocorrect grin grin

GinUpGirl Sat 04-Jul-15 16:31:27

HAHAHA I love this thread.

TurnItIn Sat 04-Jul-15 16:31:53

Quite the gangsta language for a washing thread, no?

And where do teenagers come into it?

purpleapple1234 Sat 04-Jul-15 16:36:42

May I suggest not getting the stains out so that they will not be worn again or the wearer gets the stains out themselves :-) When DD is old enough to buy white jeans she will be old enough to wash them herself. Slovenly mother that I am.

This with knobs on.

Failing that, assuming they're completely white I'd stick them in a bucket of diluted bleach overnight.

twirlypoo Sat 04-Jul-15 16:41:14

This is utterly hilarious!

6cats grin

Pristine motherfucker!!! gringrin

elderfloweriver Sat 04-Jul-15 16:42:00

I want to change my name to 'pristinemotherfucker' grin

I can't stop giggling!

twirlypoo Sat 04-Jul-15 16:42:12

Ps my mum used to 'lose' all sorts of stuff in the wash when I was a teen. Just a suggestion!

MaggieJoyBlunt Sat 04-Jul-15 16:43:12

And where do teenagers come into it?

I think the teen has bought the white jeans. OP wouldn't have chosen them (but is 'losing control of [her teen's] clothing choices' ) and is now stuck with laundering them nevertheless.

StoryOfMyLife Sat 04-Jul-15 16:44:00

This may be the funniest thread I've read on mumsnet grin

TinklyLittleLaugh Sat 04-Jul-15 16:45:05

<<Whispers>> You want the Good Housekeeping section. Not that I've ever been there of course; I'm far too hip and cool.

Ohwhatfuckeryisthis Sat 04-Jul-15 16:46:07

Do what my uptight 60s mother did with my white jeans-not only did the stains vanish, the jeans did too. grin

manechanger Sat 04-Jul-15 19:12:21

yes just come back to my thread to find it is much more interesting than I imagined from such a dull question. I guess I could more accurately describe myself as an uptight teens mum (is that how we refer to this decade?), rather than unintentionally insult mothers of strangers. I shall try the good housekeeping thread next time.

This is the first time since eighties I have encountered white jeans since dd is only just a teen, the last time my mum was washing them. Unfortunately I can't ask her since her whites were GREY MOTHERFUCKER

I soo want to hot wash them.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen Sat 04-Jul-15 19:20:15

You need Vanish Gold, the sort in the roll on container a bit like a deodorant - not too hot a wash or it sets the grass stains. Works much better than normal vanish.

Ubik1 Sat 04-Jul-15 19:24:41

Yep, use Vanish Gold, Motherfucker.
