Advice needed! Is the anime my 12 yr old watching suitable?

My nearly 13 year old daughter (year8) watches lots of anime on her mobile. I know very little about it and she likes the ones with boys kissing, apparently. She has shown me a couple which looked quite innocent but I am concerned that she does not see anything hardcore or disturbing. Are there any anime genres you would not allow your daughters/sons to watch at this age? We have got some bars on the phone and wifii which ought to filter out any pornography. And how should I talk to her about it? #feelingoutofmydepth

There are two genres of the 'boys kissing' you refer to, shounen-ai which is innocent romance, and yaoi which is more explicit. Depending on the sites she's using these are tagged, you do have to dig harder for more explicit stuff so you can keep her away from it with a certain amount of ease.

For your own peace of mind, if you want to put down a restriction, ask her to stick to a single site to watch anime. Crunchyroll is a good resource, most of the up-to-date stuff is there and it's age-controlled.

As for genres for her to keep away from, that's a bit more difficult. I would suggest sticking to shounen and shoujo (boy's and girl's series respectively) but a few of them can cross the line into other territories. Attack on Titan is huge at the moment, everyone's watching it, as is Kill la Kill, but it's up to your own discretion and how mature you feel your daughter is to decide whether she can watch them or not.

All in all, though, I wouldn't worry too much. I got into this stuff at a similar age and it's a very innocent way to explore your feelings on certain things without engaging in any real-world way that could lead to trouble. She will likely want to watch what her friends are watching, so if you get her to give you the names I can advise you on an individual basis (I do it all the time over here anyway).

Also, why not try sitting down and watching with her once in a while? I'd reccommend the new Sailormoon Crystal, it could be a nice way to bond with her and see things the way she does for a bit.

Princessteacake are the films on Crunchy roll dubbed or subtitled?

PrincessTeacake Thu 18-Sep-14 14:22:23

Mostly subbed, I know Funimation does put some of its dubs on youtube, but Crunchyroll is always my first port of call.

The anime label covers a very wide variety of shows, it's a catch all for (usually) Japanese animated films/shows. Think of it in terms that both Scooby Doo and South Park are cartoons, but one is obviously not suitable for children.

As PrincessTeacake says, avoid the Yaoi category as that's usually sexual romance between boys. Yuri is the term for sexual romance between girls. Hentai is usually the term for heterosexual couples, but also just a general catch all for explicit sexual activity - so avoid that one!

Ecchi usually has sexual themes while not being explicit. Shonen-Ai is boy love but not sexual. Shojo-Ai is Girl love. So those three are probably fine.

If you know the titles of any shows I can probably help out a bit more with the genres and whether it's suitable.

Bishopstonmum my year 8 is mad about Anime as well or anything Japanese (as I was at her age a long, long time ago when the Water Margin was on the telly grin) so will def. have a look at that crunchyyroll website
