My daughter has the opposite problem she's 14 and a size 8 but is is a 30dd bra and she is struggling to find bras that are comfy and plain as for school she needs them we can only seem to find quite lacy bras and she gets embarrassed shopping for them any suggestions ?

I was an A cup at her age. Only after having dd did I go up to a D. I am very pear shaped.

Tell your daughter she is beautiful every day. When the convo gets to boobs don't dismiss her but tell her she's still developing and not to worry. In a society where glossy mags give all women an unattainable image to live up to, it must seem hard for her to understand there is no normal.

How about encouraging her to accept that it's completely normal to feel the way she does for her age and stage, but that is is a stage and she'll likely feel better about it once she's older and either developed something that fits with her view of 'ideal' or changed her 'ideal' with time. Help her believe that some guys like small and also that males have different sizes themselves or their special parts too and also face the big is better supposed 'norm' that's really rubbish. Revelation to me was overhearing a male workmate comment that more than a handful (of breast) was a waste! Made me feel better!

Queenbee245 Thu 25-Jul-13 17:40:49

Does she do any sports on a regular basis? Such as swimming or ballet?
My friend in high school used to swim for our towns under 16 team, she was completely flat chested untill she stopped and suddenly became a dd almost overnight it seemed

I still haven't staggered up to a C and I like it that way.

I get the feeling big boobs just cost more in bras.

almapudden Fri 14-Dec-12 19:24:05

I was an A cup until I was 16, then a B cup, didn't get to a C cup until I was about 19!

MsElleTow Fri 14-Dec-12 19:21:04

I was really quite flat chested when I was a teen. My mum and my sister, who were busty, used to take the piss out of me all the time!sad. The only time I got boobs was when I was pregnant, then breastfeeding.

I lost a lot of weight and my boobs went down to a 32b, but over the past few years they have got bigger again. I have just have them measured at a 32F! My sister's have shrunk away to nothing <karma!>

She might be a late developer, Infact just 14 is not really that late is it? Poor thing, it is sad that it is making her feel low. She has plenty of time to develop yet. You can only reassure she is gorgeous!

SorrelForbes Fri 14-Dec-12 19:12:48

If she measures herself (under the bust tightly and then across the bust loosely) is there a difference between the two sizes? If the measurements are exactly the same then she is an AA cup. However, if there's a 1" difference she's an A, 2" a B etc. My 13 year old niece looks quite flat chested but actually wears a 28DD!

jinglebellyalltheway Fri 14-Dec-12 19:12:02

I had a totally flat child chest at 14, and a DDs at 15 shock

CarefulUpThere Fri 14-Dec-12 19:11:02

And it is really worth remembering that current cultural ideas of beauty/how women should look are just that- cultural ideas.

Like the ideas that have led women to put lead and mercury containing cream on skin to whiten it, to break their child's feet and bind them up, to put brass rings on their necks to lengthen them hugely, sew and cut their child's genitals...

crazycrackernanna Fri 14-Dec-12 19:09:21

Yep dd is 14 and is also a bit on the flat side. She still hasn't started her periods.

She is tall and slim, but has curves and a bottom, etc,so is developing.

I was wearing a bra at 9,periods at 10. and was a 38dd at 12.

I hated it sad

Jackstini Fri 14-Dec-12 19:03:32

I was like this at 14 AAA I think.
By 17 had a B cup, went to C cup about 30 and after kids am a D

GaryBuseysTeeth Fri 14-Dec-12 19:01:46

I didn't need a bra at 14 (nickname was pancake).
At 16 my boobs sprang out of nowhere & I was a 32F (led to rumours of me getting a boob job & the nickname Jordan).

If it's purely from a 'boys won't like me' point that she's self concious all the 'fittest' women in the world atm (those topping the lists) aren't that big of boobage (Mila Kunis, Miranda Kerr, Candice Swanpoel) etc.

I know that once a teen girl gets fixated on the 'ugly' part of her body there's nothing you can do to change it but I hope she starts loving her flat chestedness soon.

CarefulUpThere Fri 14-Dec-12 18:53:02

I've been a AAA for most of my life, AA whilst ebf. Which felt huge and weird to me, so glad they are back to normal now!

The average slightly overweight man has bigger boobs than me wink

Was a bit sad about this as a teenager but very happy as an adult- don't need a bra, comfortable for doing sport/dance/yoga etc and I like having a kind of sleek profile. And my boobs have fed 2 dd's, so size totally isn't a factor there. Plus no drooping as nothing to droop.

Plenty of "real women" are similar. Including some who are lauded for their looks (and other talents) like Keira Knightly, Kate Moss, Natalie Portman, Darcy Bussell (ok just about any ballet dancer!) Jessica Ennis...prob lots of other sportswomen too but I'm clueless about sport.

Surely though the issue is being confident in yourself, accepting yourself, being comfortable with yourself, whatever your size, shape or appearance. How we help our dd's to develop this knack especially when bombarded with images of how they are "supposed" to look I don't know.

hellymelly Fri 14-Dec-12 18:15:38

I was flat at 14 (no periods either) at 17 I was around a 28 E.

GraduallyGoingInsane Fri 14-Dec-12 18:08:21

My DDs are pretty flat chested too - DD1 (16) is an A cup, and DD2 (14) is an AA. They are both tiny skinny little whippets, so it's not really surprising. They both get a bit down about it, and padded bras are all they own.

I'm still only a C cup (and that was only much later in life) so I doubt they'll do much growing.

I always tell my girls that people would kill for their abs, legs etc - and if that comes with slightly less boob, then so be it. Focus on the good bits, and the boobs will come in time.

LST Fri 14-Dec-12 17:05:13

I'm a flat chested 22 yo.. and I've had dc!!

Pipsytwos Fri 14-Dec-12 17:04:08

Just thought I'd say I was a 32AA at 14 by 15 32D, now after my first child 34F (breastfeeding) She could just be a late developer, she's still young.

Although, I'd bloody love to be a nice B cup! grass is always greener envy

It's a real shame that girls feel so much pressure. My hope for my daughter when she grows up is that she is happy with herself. The idea of her thinking any part of herself is less than the perfection it is, is really upsetting.

MoreCrackThanHarlem Fri 14-Dec-12 16:50:42

Imo (uptight and po faced, probably)she is far too young for a boyfriend anyhow.
So sad when young girls have such low self esteem.
You mention she is 'stunning' so receives plenty of male attention, this makes me feel uncomfortable. Her worth shouldn't be linked to her appearance at all.

ArbitraryUsername Fri 14-Dec-12 16:35:19

It's really sad that your daughters think no boy would be interested in them because of the size of their breasts or that having small breasts makes you an inferior woman. There's something very wrong in a culture when that's a common issue for young girls.

(And, the fact is, anyone who'd discount you based purely in the size of your breasts is not someone you'd want as a boyfriend anyway.)

MimsyBorogroves Fri 14-Dec-12 14:57:54

I was the same at 14. At 16 I was an A cup. At 18, and in a B cup I went for my first proper measure (as in, not at M&S) and came out as a D cup. grin

witchofmiddx Fri 14-Dec-12 14:51:43

I have exactly the same problem with my 15 year old daughter. She buys padded bras and 'chicken fillets' to fill out her bras, and she is starting to dispair of getting any bigger. She told me no boy will ever fancy her because they like 'real women'. Unfortunately you cannot wrap up confidence and give it to someone, whatever i say makes no difference. She actually has a model figure but wishes for chunky legs! The way she is dealing with it is to spend a lot of time on her hair, make-up and clothes to make her feel good in other ways.
