Learning to drive in Surrey

Ds1 will be 17 in October and wants to learn to drive as soon as possible. Everything has changed since I took my test in the dark ages! Does he do the theory test first then contact a driving school or is that done through a driving school first and do it with them? Once the theory has been passed does one then go onto learn in a car?

Can anyone recommend a good, reasonably priced driving school in the Redhill/Reigate area. How much should we expect to pay for lessons and how long did it take for your dc to get their driving licence?

We live in France and ds is at boarding school. Already finding trying to apply for provisional licence difficult.

Thanks.

Can do theory first then practical after, or start practical before theory , but must pass theory test before booking a practical. If he is really keen and will get on with the theory then start the practical lessons at the same time: if not use passing the theory test as the carrot for starting practical lessons. Get the official CD for practicing hazard and theory + the highway code.

Ask the school for recommendations for instructors from last year's crop of 17 year olds. Expect to pay about £25 per hour and the lessons to be 2 hours long.

Thanks for that. Will look into getting the cd.

School won't recommend anyone or set up a deal with a driving school for their 6th formers.

shock at the price! Think he'll only be receiving money from family to pay for his lessons for his birthday, no presents!
