How much money do you give to your teen?

How old is yours?

Our girls are 16 and 14 and get 30 pound each a month plus a tenner's worth of phone top up about every six weeks.

They only get it if they are v good and tbh the only time we've ever had to threaten to not give it is if dd2 lets her room get too messy. Usually they are good!

At 14 and 16 I wouldn't hold back pocket money if their rooms were too messy. I have 3 DDs and at that age their rooms were their responsibility and I didn't enter unless invited . Sorry a bit off target when ours were 14 they had £25 a month paid straight into a bank account . This went up to £30 when they were 16.
If they had apart time job the allowance was stopped. In fact once they were 16 and finished exams. They only got the allowance they made a good effort to look for avjob.

Mumeeee - dd2's room is tiny and would be an absolute pit if we left it entirely up to her and didn't give her the occasional incentive to tidy it! Ultimately, it is a courtesy for her to at least keep on top of it a bit so that she can get the hoover around every now and then. So far, the threat of losing a bit of allowance means that we haven't had to follow through with the threat because she gets the room tidy in time to avoid losing money!

Anyway - it works for us. :)

DD age 15 gets £35/month. She as to buy her own clothes/cinema/bowling/bus fares etc. We pay her phone (£6/month) and buy school clothes, underwear and other essentials. She can earn extra money doing jobs I would pay someone else to do.

Mine are 13 and 14 and get £60 a month each. £4 of it goes immediately on sponsoring an animal, and from the rest they have to basically look after themselves - clothes, outings, toiletries, phone credit etc. I buy school uniforms, pay for drama group etc, pay for looking after their bikes. It's not dependent on anything. I expect them to pull their weight around the house regardless of money, and they're pretty helpful :)

DD1 13. gets £30 a month paid direct to bank a/c.
She also gets her £15pm phone contract paid, on the understanding that if she goes over, it comes out of her allowance.

We also pay for school stuff (trips, lunches, travel) activities, music school, clothes (although if she buys herself something she doesn't need, unless agreed in advance, we don't refund).

Allowance not linked to chores, but we do deduct for swearing.

ds (14) has his phone contract paid for (£15 per month) although that was a birthday present so doesn't really count

We pay £30 into his bank account every month and he has to pay for games, cinema trips, going out etc out of that

We buy basic clothes (uniform, underwear etc, no labels) and he has £50 per quarter to supplement his wardrobe - he has the choice of buying something outright or 'upgrading' our basic purchases. We also buy one lot of kit for his sport.

If he loses or breaks anything he has to pay for it in full, so this month he's had to make do with £5 as he threw the xbox controller on the floor in a fit of frustration Hmm. He tried to reason that ds2 should pay for half of it as he'd use it too (shared console), and was quite miffed that his argument didn't wash Grin

DS is 16. I give him £100 pm and gran gives him another £35. I buy him stuff like shoes, jeans etc but he often buys t shirts etc out of his allowance.

He's doing chores now because he's finished GCSEs but doesn't normally have to do much when he's at school.

Dd is 14 and gets £12/month. We supply basic clothes and basic toiletries (soap and shampoo) and the very occasional bus fare into town; she has to pay anything extra. We also pay her drama school fees. Not linked to chores, though we have told her that she will have to take her turn in doing the washing up this summer for the allowance to be paid out.

We have a swear kitty for the whole family but the only person who has ever had to put any money in it is Muvver Blush

DS 1 is 17 and gets £20 pm into bank account and £10 top up a month plus a bus pass and dinner money for college. I don't think that sounds like very much but DH thinks it's plenty.

DD17 and DD15 each get £30pcm paid directly into their bank accounts.

Out of this, they have to buy their own make-up and accessories, buy birthday presents for their friends, save up for Chrustmas presents for the family and pay for their social life - cinema tickets, coffees, trip to Wagamamas etc.

In addition, we pay their mobile phone contract and hair (highlights and trim).

I buy their school uniforms and a basic wardrobe including underwear, jeans, a coat, couple of tops, one dress, a cardi, replace knackered stuff etc. They pay for any extra stuff. My budget is H and M/ Zara/ Primark/ Top Shop. If they want something high-end then we go halves.

They both like clothes for birthday/Christmas too.

DD17 has a Saturday job in a shop which pays about £130pcm - she's earned £1000 since she started 8 months ago!). She's quite cautious with money and a good little saver but then has the money to treat herself to something nice/ go out and enjoy herself if she wishes.

I deliberately haven't stopped her £30pcm allowance because I don't want her to feel that she's being penalised for working.

DD15 babysits occasionally but it's not regular or reliable enough to depend on. She's desperate to get a job but at fifteen it's difficult because you're competing with older teenagers and most places prefer 16 plus. as soon as she breaks up for summer she's going to sort her CV out and go and blitz all the hair-dressers and cafes to see if she can get something.

Ds1 (15) gets £25 per month paid straight into his bank account. He was getting an extra £5 p/m for hoovering the stairs each week but had to be 'reminded' so often we stopped it. He also has a contract phone at £25 per month.

I know his father pays lumps of money into his account on occasion- last time it was £100 doesn't pay maintenance but that's another thread and ds1 also gets money from time to time from GPs.

We buy all clothes/school supplies/lunches etc and he gets extra cash for lunches out (e.g on a trip to a theme park).

If he loses/breaks anything (e'g he broke the screen on his iPod touch) we give him an interest free loan kind of deal, whereby he pays us back over several months, deducted staright from his allowance.

We have told him that he won't get an increase from us; if he wants more spends he must get a part time job. Funnily enough, so far his allowance has been ample for him!
