How Much Does Having Your Own Website Cost?

Please excuse my very basic I.T references but I struggle with I.T. at the best of times.

Fortunately, I know someone who is able to help me out and build a website/assist me with the technical aspect, for a very small cost.

So my question is, apart from support with the initial development, what other costs are involved? I believe I require a domain - I've seen single web pages advertised at a relatively low cost - but are these what they say they are just one page without a click down menu etc?
Realistically, how much does it cost to purchase a domain? Also, are there any other costs involved with this? I am unlikely to make a lot of money from the website (but may wish to place links to a possible very small on-line business in the future). I'd like to be able to put a few blogs on there as I am planning to self-publish a book in the near future which tackles a specific issue.

Any advice gratefully received.

I use go daddy, I don't understand the technical side, but I paid around £100 for the domain (think that's right, as in the name of the website) and to get it all set up, I designed it myself on there but was very easy, like a template you fill in. I then pay around £80 a year to keep it going.

I pay a pro to sort mine. It cost me one off £500 for the initial design and I pay £150 a year for the hosting/maintenance/security.

Domains vary depending on which you go for - I pay £7.50 a year for my .co.uk domain, whereas .com is generally more expensive.

The other cost is the website itself, the hosting of the site. There are places Wix that are free, but they tend to only provide you with a limited set of tools to build your site with. Another popular free option is WordPress.com

Paying for hosting will vary depending on the technical requirements e.g. how much storage space, whether you need php or to install various things. If your friend is going to build the site for you, then ask them what the technical requirements are.

Personally, I've used 34SP for years, they're very reasonably priced, and their customers service is excellent.

I have 5 websites and I don't pay more than £25 quid a year for any of them. I use a free Web platform. No other costs. It can be very easy
