Does taking tamiflu prevent contracting H1N1?

My DD's boarding school was closed for 2 weeks earlier this year as 12 students contracted H1N1. She was sent home with tamiflu to take as she had been in contact with infected students (the side effects from the tamiflu were not nice - extreme nausea and dizziness). I was wondering how long the virus resistance effects of taking tamiflu lasted.

Nope. Tamiflu stops the virus from repliating(sp?), it's not the same as a vaccination.

NO. It shortens the cycle of the virus.

Sorry but this is not correct. Oseltamivir (Tamiflu) is very good as prophylaxis and the evidence strong for preventing infection in a family situation.

Thanks all, but why bother with tamiflu with non infected contact cases then............... hmm DD had such terrible side effects - so was it pointless taking tamiflu?

PS particularly as swine flu seems to be very virulent (sp?) in the area we live in.
