Dear Parent,

I am a student at the UCL Institute of Education enrolled on the Professional Doctorate in Educational, Child and Adolescent Psychology. I am writing to invite you to take part in a piece of research investigating children’s social lives and friendships outside of school. Specifically the research is investigating the opportunities children have to access social activities and develop relationships with other children. We are also particularly interested in the views and experiences of parents of children with Special Educational Needs.

This survey should take no longer than ten minutes to complete and can be accessed at the address below.

This research has met the ethical guidelines set by the British Psychological Society and all information collected will remain anonymous and confidential.

If you have any questions or would like to request more information please do not hesitate to contact Simon Higley, by emailing

Thank you!

It took far longer than ten minutes.

It won't be informative because it's the school holidays nearly everywhere.

You tell us to skip to question number n but the questions aren't numbered.

What is your sample frame?

It does take a much longer time than 10 mins.

As above: these things are school holiday dependent - have you accounted for that?

Are you aware of the MCS? You could get similar information from a far, far better sample, as well as ideas for qualitative questions...
