Poor soul has an ulcer on her eye Sad

Her usually lovely black shiney eye is red with an opaque indentation. Yesterday it was lack with a bit of opaque clouding, we bathed in salted water looking for lurking hay . This morning it seemed a bit better , still opaque .
I've had loads of guinea-pig hay poke situations , normally they settle with some salt water sluicing and making sure its clear.

Her eye is red, bulging .
So , emergency vet visit today , her eye was numbed and checked , nothing found in it . Gel and drops now for a week then we see . (She could lose the eye )

She just licked my fingers while her eye was being checked , these animals are so gentle . She could've done a bloody great bite but she didn't .

So , DD and I are on Pig Duty . GP7 has no hay for sleeping , just solid hay .

Sad

Aw thanks EastMidPiggies

GP7 eye has a sloughy loose bit in the middle now , she tolerating the drops&gel really well but she's hiding herself under her fleece which is odd .
I will give her back a hidey box , maybe she just wants to tuck herself away - but it will make it harder to just do a quick check without disturbing her .

Off to do the next round of Piggy Care

Poor GP7. That sounds uncomfortable. At least she's being good about drops etc. Hope she makes a good recovery. No doubt plenty of treats are now essential because meds don't work unless taken in conjunction with oodles of parsley etc.

Maybe the dark is more comfortable for her eye at present? Or she just feels miserable with it?

DH insisted Sadie had M&S giant blueberries after her last vet visit a couple of weeks ago.
He justified this by saying "she's an elderly lady now who deserves treats".
I swear Sadie gave me a smug look as he handfed her said blueberries 😃😃

Oddly enough the Vet didn't mention blueberries or parsley ( probably thought I should go and pick grass'n'lions as he presented the bill . ) Wink

(Not giving away the price but it was over 6x what I paid for Piggy )

Our recent vet bills have been horrendous!
Equal to the GPD of a small country😂

T'other week Sadie was admitted for the day, when I rang to check on her I was told she was "snuggled down on a heat pad". Put the phone down and thought I'd like to spend the day in similar fashion!

Hope the patient is feeling better today.

I may check myself in at your vets EastMids - it sounds lovelyGrin.

Currentbun is due a visit soon for his vaccinations and a health check. I'll have to stock up on his special biscuits to compensate.

How's the patient 70? Is she okay?

She's wheeky and lively , eating and poohing.
Her eye is less red but there's still the sloughy bit in the middle (I am used to ulcers in my line of work, just not on my poor cavy Sad )

We are not out of the woods at all.

If she does improve dramatically and the eye heals she'll likely be blind.
If it doesn't and they suggest removal, would she survive the surgery ?. She's nearly 5yo and gone through two partner losses in the last 6 months.

I'm hoping for the best but preparing for the worst ,

woodhill did your piggies keep their eye/eyes or did they need surgery?

GP7 's eye is less red , still got a sloughy centre .
If the eye can be saved and she can avoid the risks of surgery and recovery then hopefully she can cope with reduced vision.

I know piggies hide their illnesses so we are keeping a really close check on her . She still demands her breakfast and supper (loudly) and gives the waterbottle a 3am rattle Wink

Aw 70 I hope she is ok. You were really helpful when I asked for advice about our new piggies a few months ago, I'm sorry this is happening and am crossing everything for her! 🍀🤞

She's accepting her drops/gel and all the extra attention. Little toad peed on DD , then I took her thinking "Oh she's empty" but she managed to save some for me and after stamping her back legs twice , just peed .

Droppings at an amazing rate (I have a unhealthy obsession with my guinea-pigs' output but it gives you a huge insight into their health)

I will put a photo up (with a warning) later but she does look a tad Marilyn Manson Sad

GP7 had a check up today - her eye has much improved , a manky sloughy lump came away yesterday and the corneal layer looks cleaner but not absolutely healed .
There's a shallow indentation , the eye itself is clouded/opaque but nowhere near as red .

The vet is hopeful that she'll keep her eye if the healing continues but unsure if she'll get her sight back.

I'm pretty convinced she is blind in the eye judging on how she reacts . But she's still got one good eye and a terrific sense of smell and the excellant but selective hearing of a guinea-pig.

She's eating well and poohing/peeing but looks a bit rough having been ill. She needs some nice garden days to get her back to fine fettle .

Still not out of the woods yet , these little animals are notorious for turning corners then doubling back to The Bridge !

Hopefully on the mind then 😃
I reckon however much sight she has, as long as she can sniff her treats and dandelions she'll be fine. Of course she will need more of each to compensate!

Mentioned GP7's eye to vet last night, she said they'd treated 4 piggies this week for various ailments including one with an eye ulcer.
Presumably GPs have collectively decided it is time to check our vets realise how special piggies are 😉

GP7 accepted some grazing time late this afternoon, I'm convinced she came in heavier Grin . We only let her have 45 minutes then when she went into her cardboard box that the the cue to bring her indoors.

Her eye looks a load better but still opaque . She seems to know when the drops are landing so I'm hoping she's got a bit of peripheral vision back at least .
