I had 2 rescue rats, had them for a year so not sure of age.
One rat deteriorated rapidly last week & was pts on Sunday ☹️ up until then his cagemate was fine (has always been a sneezy rat,but had loxicom for bad episodes of sneezing, which always helped),but on Monday he started sneezing & wheezing a lot. Took him to the vets yesterday & was given septrin, struggled to get him to take his first dose. Still wheezing & it seems like an effort to breathe.
I've come down this morning & he's stopped eating & looks really miserable. Had to hold him & syringe septrin in to him (which was horrible).
It's upsetting to see him struggling so much & I don't know what to do ☹️ is it time to pts too?

How old is he?
I learnt the hard way not to do heroic measures with ratties. Not fair on anybody.

Not sure, when I rescued them they were fully grown & I've had them a year,so could be 2 plus.

gotcha, sorry, didn't read your OP properly.
There's no real winner here, but whatever knocked the first one out is probably at work. I think I would hold out if I were you, but there's no great choice here.

He's currently snuggled up with me on the sofa. He's definitely missing his mate. Just hoping the septrin kicks in soon. It's horrible hearing him struggling ☹️

Hey lljkk . Not as much of an improvement as I would have hoped for this morning. He's still very wheezy & just wants to sit with me snuggled up.I put a warm wheat bag in his cage last night & he was happy to snuggle up on that. But the bit that's worrying me is that he didn't eat yesterday (even treat food) & doesn't seem interested this morning either. He's definitely pining for his mate.
I have rang the vets & asked to speak to the small animal vet (that I have seen before with my boys) to ask her advice.
But I'm not feeling optimistic Sad

We had one I force fed oil to... sort of, syringed it in, anyway. She perked up a huge amount for a few days. She cuddled with DS her last few nights, was a good way to see her off.

Hope yours recovers. x

Sad It is a tough decision, even when it's the right one , it still difficult.

Bye Bye little rattie with your little rat feet (I love their paws) and long rat tail.
