Not looking good for Millie, guinea pig

Millie has had a large lump on her bottom. The part nearest her anus has a very thick grey scab.

Today's weather is very mild and I picked her up to take her into the garden when I noticed the scab is gone. In it place a large open wound. I think Millie has chewed it off.

She is lively and eating but obviously I can't leave her like that. Vet apt booked for 5.00pm.

I don't think the vet will be able to close the wound. The skin on the lump is quite tight. I think my options are pts or try to operate . It's horrible to pts when they are so full of life , they try to resist the gas and it's very distressing to watch. Her ears are cold, so she might go down hill quickly.

What would you do if she was yours? For those who don't know of Millie, she is my last piggie and well over 6 years old.

Oh poor Millie Sad

By now you'll have seen the vets so it'll be decided which way to go.
If it was my piggie I think I'd bring her home, bathe her poor little scabby bum in salt water, give her fleece rather than anything coarse like hay and see how she goes in the next few days.
If she's eating and poohing happily then let Millie be your guide.

Of course , she might have decided by now that she's ready to leave this Earths' crust and join her cagemates?

One of mine had a massive open wound after being neutered (complications) and we just waited for it to heal. He was a little bugger and kept chewing the scab off but it healed really well and he was fine. We just used newspaper for bedding and used a hay rack. No issues after that.

I’d do the same as 70, bring her home and see how she goes.

Millie came home Smile

Vet saw she is still full of life all be it very lumpy too. Hole too big to close surgically. Vet tried to aspirated fluid but there isn't any.

Treatment metacam and baytril in the hope that the hole/lump shrinks. Daily wash with hibiscrub. Avoid hay for sitting on. I'll have to see if I can rig up a hay rack.

Thanks for all the good wishes and paw holds. Xx

Glad she’s home and comfortable. The Fernie pigs send her parsley hugsWink. Hope the wound heals up nicely. If she’s eating and pootling, it’s always a good sign.

Poor little thing. I am in the same situation with my doggie - she has nasty blood filled lumps on her body - vet took samples and we are waiting to see what it is. She is perfectly normal otherwise - eating greedily as usual and doing all other doggie things normally. I am so worried though!

That’s happy news, we only have dogs, is metacam a cure all for every animal?

Mine love meta cam. Little drug addicts! Good luck to Millie.

Metacam is like GuineaPig crack cocaine . Our GP3 moseyed over post neuter to glug his syringe .
Our vet always gives extra in the bottle ,(for user error/ klutzy man hands) GP3 took this as him needing the extra because obvs having surgery on his bollocks meant he was a fragile little flower and needed all the drugs he could get Wink

Hopefully Millie will have a comfy night , the hay is a problem , even in a rack they pull it and sit in it

I've removed Millie's log roll tunnel because she hasn't the spacial awareness of how much her back end sticks out and she is catching her lump on it. This has not pleased her. She has spent the evening huddled up in a bath towel she has made into a sort of cave.

She has had a lot of her favourite foods for tea, so it's been all bad for her .

Hole has a thick layer of congealed blood. Hoping a scab will develop.

Yesterday Millie sat in her towelling cave all day. Wouldn't move to the bedroom where I had laid a lot of hay. I grabbed a handful and put it near her. She gratefully ate the lot.

Got to evening and time for medicine and hibiscrub. OMG it looked like she was sitting in her own weight in poo! And I found the reason she hadn't moved was she had got her head stuck in a hole in the towel Confused

Millie needed a bum dip in the hand basin in the loo before the hibiscub. She wasn't impressed by the medicine.

poor love , she didn't protest at being stuck?

They do like sitting in their own pooh nest, manky little toads. She'll need intensive TLC, food handed to her and Rodent Husbandry to keep her little tender spots clean.
'Tis a labour of love when they're ill, they are so pathetically grateful though Sad
Is she cuddly or does she just want a quiet life?
