Someone very kindly gave us one of these gratis, free, no charge. It took me and DS an hour to put it together and we’re not convinced that it’s suitable, never mind how we would go about dismantling it to clean and then putting it back together again. Are we being wimps? Any views on this monster? Should we ditch it and get something else? It’s intended to be a second cage for when the other one is being cleaned and I’m too lazy busy to do it there and then

Ditch it. They're awful cages. Totally unsuitable.

Ditch - they're poorly ventilated, awful to clean and far too small to meet welfare needs (not sure if you're already aware, but 80x50cm unbroken floorspace is the minimum footprint required... no Rotastak cage meets that, no matter how many add ons you have)

Hamsters don't need to be cleaned out that often, especially in cages that are large enough, so you're better off leaving the hamster in the cage for an extra day or two until you have time, and then sticking the hamster in the ball / similar while you do the cleaning.

Thanks, I’m already convinced it’s the devil’s work. I will look for something better. I just thought that maybe I wasn’t trying hard enough to make it work

For permanent cages, I'd have a look at - the Alaska, Barney and Alexander models all meet welfare needs and are excellent value for money
