We found him in his nest yesterday morning.
He's now buried in the garden with the last roses from the garden with him.
RIP little fellow.
His surviving housemate is missing him. We have to make the decision about whether to find him a friend or if at 2 1/2 he's better off finishing his days on his own. It just seems so quiet without the normal squeaks and sawdust excavation sessions.

Sad I've never kept gerbils myself - very sad when a pet crosses The Bridge.
I'd imagine trying to pair up a 2.6yo with a new friend will be tricky (animals get quite set in their ways don't they?)

Is housemate called Pepper by any chance?

Aww, farewell to Salt.

2 and a half years ... that's pretty good going for a gerbil isn't it?

Surviving gerb is called Pepper . His foster carers name all their gerbs after herbs and spices (and condiments!).
He doesn't seem too bothered at the moment, and is giving his chew toy a hammering as I'm typing.
One thing we've noticed is that he no longer grabs his treats and hides to eat them, now his dominant brother isn't around to pinch them off him he sits on his roof and eats "loud and proud".
Fingers crossed that he'll settle for life as a grumpy single old man.
