I've poisoned dds guinea pigs.

We've had them years. Didn't know they can't have mushrooms.

One has died and the other looks like it will. It's been to the vet who says they can't do anything. Just to wait and see.

Oh - but I'm surprised at the vet, if I'd lost a mature/older pig and the other was ill from the same problem, I think I'd have elected to have the ill piggie PTS.

Guinea-pigs don't have the ability to vomit and when whatever it has eaten has passed through can you stop her eating the first droppings?

Make sure she does have plenty of hay and pellets , (they are meant to eat their first pooh to get the nutrients - in the wild they;d scoff what they can and get the full benefit at their leisure when hiding, but at the moment your piggie sounds like she could go one way or t'other )

There was a thread a while back where the guineas were given a load of potato peelings, IIRC they were given a load of food to chase it all through their system and were ok . But your guinea , is she floppy or meh ?

I did have a look on Peter Gurneys page, he was writing about charcoal tablets to absorb poison and liquid paraffin to slip everything through.

Can't see an ill piggie wanting to have truck with that, but he writes that he's pulled a few through with that.

Vet said it was poisoning.

Dh thought it might be a tomato plant which has self seeded against the side of the run. Now I know tomato plants and potato leaves are poisonous but they've never touched the tomato plant so I assumed they knew it was poisonous. Still doesn't look touched so it must be the mushrooms.

Most of the time in poisoning cases though there's not much you can do but treat the symptoms...

I've no idea Micah. The vet is shit, they killed my last dog during a routine tooth clean. I won't take my current dog there.

Dh would just have used them as they're the nearest vets and he's meant to be at work and would have had to take time off for the guinea pig this morning and probably isn't very impressed.

I have no idea. Appparantly she was fine during the op but they found her dead in the cage in recovery later.

And still charged me £280 for it, which they were at pain to point out they'd knocked £80 off the bill.

They reckoned they'd done nothing wrong and it was one of those things. But then admitted she'd been under a GA for 90 mins as it took a bit longer than expected. Which for a greyhound I think was too long, especially as the previous year they'd only done half her mouth and had to bring her round early as she wasnt coping with the GA.

Dh is been a bit arsey via text. I said I didn't know about the mushrooms and he said he looked online. Maybe he isn't been arsey and I read it that way.....that I should have looked. But maybe that's my guilt. Can't talk to him because of dd.

Ok, it might cost you but can you ring up another vet for a phone consult. Vets4pets/pah and all the big chains are usually subscribed to vet poisons and can consult over the phone for you.

Offer to pay, as I said you may get charged for the phone consult but you'd get an idea of whether there's anything worth doing (taking physically to the vet for) or whether is a keep warm and see...

We were in the same boat not so long ago- a moments inattention led to the death of one of my dd's much loved small furries. Horrible feeling.

The bigger picture is you have a bereaved piggie now. They don't really fare well after losing their cagemate is they are a long established pair and already ill themselves.
Which was why I was surprised as the vet knew your other pig had died/poisoned and your other one "look like it will" that they sent her home.
You'd think at least they'd have kept her in to monitor.
Unless your DH stated that he didn't want to leave her ? (After what you've written about your dog)

If the vet had recommended leaving her then dh would have done. He's not one to distrust any professional regardless of past incompetence.

Piggie is 6 or 7 years old so a good age as well. Which makes me think its more likely she won't make it.

Dh says she's hanging on but still lethargic. I'm guessing tonight she'll either die or turn a corner. If she's still the same I'll tell dh to take her back to the vet.

Galaxy when I took our GP2 to the vet (he was unwell, lethargic, not eating) I was worried in case he would suggest having him PTS (my DD was with me) . Piggie wasn't in any pain, but we had no idea what was wring.
But - I wanted my pig to die at home. Which he did. About 7 hours later.

I honestly didn't know he'd go that quick, and I trust our Pig Vet 100%. I'm not suggesting your DH over-rode the vets advice - but I think I would have done TBH with our pig. GP2 was blah but not in discomfort IYSWIM .

6-7 is a good age. Probably what you'd class as "elderly" in Pig Years.

I think, by tomorrow, you'll have your answer.

Do I need to be looking at getting her a friend? I know ideally the answer would be yes but I can't keep buying a single guinea pig for ever. Dd perhaps not surprisingly hasn't shown much interest the last couple of years and its been me doing all the cleaning out.
