Our hamster has escaped!

DD cleaned his cage on Sunday and it seems she didn't reattach one of the tunnels correctly. Kevin escaped in the night Sad. It's been two days and there is no trace of him anywhere. Any suggestions for luring him back? Has anyone had a happy ending to this scenario? I'm particularly worried as we have two dogs that would probably view him as a snack!

We lost one of our rats once , although no one admitted to leaving the cage open and we found her in a drawer in the kitchen she had gone through a tiny hole in the top of the kick boards and gone in the back of the drawer. When I was little our hamster escaped and hid behind the gas fire . Hope you find him soon .

In the childrens fiction book, The World According to Humphrey the hamster was enticed back to his cage with a trail of sunflower seeds. Maybe alittle pile of food will encourage him to come out of hiding Hmm. Worth a try? Sorry no experience with hammies.

Good luck with the search.

Okay what you need to do is put the hamsters house on the floor, make a book stair case so it can climb up and drop back in.Put plenty of food in the cage and it will take itself to bed.I know it sounds bonkers but it works.Obviously the cage needs to be in the room you misplaced the hamster in.Good luck

Thanks for all your replies. It's been almost three days and still no sign of him. We've left the open cage on the floor tonight and DD is going to leave a trail of seeds on the floor. I'm sure he's having a great adventure somewhere .

Leave a swab of peanut butter for him in either his cage or humane trap, has helped lots of hamsters I know find their way home. Good luck Smile

Just wanted to update...I found him this morning, alive and well Grin! I was dusting in the basement and found a little trail of hamster poop on the carpet. We have one of those giant IKEA bookshelves down there so I pulled out all the toys and he had made a nest behind it with doll clothes, some of DDs craft stuff and a cardboard spinner from a board game Confused. He did not appear happy to have been disturbed but was otherwise no worse for wear. He had a LONG drink of water and is now sleeping peacefully in his cage again. I can't wait to tell DD when she gets home from school...she's going to be ecstatic Smile.

Thanks again for all your replies and suggestions Thanks.

yay!

I have had many houdini hamsters over the years... my most impressive one was a roberovski (sp?) Jerry... he was very good at escaping but always came back, unlike any other Rob I have read about! once he was gone a week, I'd just given up hope and then saw him running across the lounge floor - of course being so tiny made catching him tricky, we used to throw a teatowel over him and then scoop him up.... bloody fast little critters - gorgeous though!
