Martha - is this for your black tie wedding do?

MarthaFarquhar · 03/11/2009 16:24

yes tulpe.

I hate shopping for occasions. Saw loads of fab jeans and jumpers, but was very uninspired re more formal stuff.

Okay. Are you set on a black dress? Or will you consider other colours?

Do you want something that covers up and is perhaps more funky than traditional formal black tie attire?

Budget?

Size?

Megglevache · 03/11/2009 16:27

OOh what dress was it. I am liking Wallis again this season.

The jersey dresses are lovely, I am too lumpy to wear them mind you

MarthaFarquhar · 03/11/2009 16:31

meggle it was this. very nice in the flesh, not too short (am 5'9"), just seemed really boxy and unflattering.

might be fine on folk who are not pear shaped?

OP posts:
Amandoh · 03/11/2009 16:32

Was it the velvet one?

MarthaFarquhar · 03/11/2009 16:33

tulpe - any colour apart from clear reds is fine. size 12-14 pear, (16 bottom on bad day), no norks, good waist and tum, terrible thighs, don't mind less formal.

OP posts:
tulpe · 03/11/2009 16:37

how about this one from Coast? It will balance out a pear as the sleeves will add width to your top half.

tulpe · 03/11/2009 16:39

also good for pear balancing

MarthaFarquhar · 03/11/2009 16:40

tulpe that is very pretty, and I like the waist. it does look worryingly short though - have you seen it in the shop?

OP posts:
MarthaFarquhar · 03/11/2009 16:40

the first one that is, not sure re second.

tulpe · 03/11/2009 16:42

lovely shape to emphasise gorgeous waist and will balance out pear as the shoulders go right to the top of your arm rather than "straps", iyswim. Black would be a great option and an LBD this shape will be in your wardrobe for years to come

tulpe · 03/11/2009 16:43

Not seen in the flesh - just cruising the Coast site now

As a rule, Coast don't do "too short" though, ime.

NorksDrift · 03/11/2009 16:43

Any good? (The Kenwood fitted dress)
I don't think it's that short in real life.

MarthaFarquhar · 03/11/2009 16:45

ooh, that might work too, norks, if it's a bit longer in RL.

MadreInglese · 03/11/2009 16:47

I wore this for a posh wedding last month, it's much more of a darker emerald green than on the pic and is lovely and swooshy

There's a knee length green version too, and one in dark blue

Megglevache · 03/11/2009 16:47

have you seen the Adelaide Dress from Monsoon, very subtle, quite slinky so I don't think it woudl be boxy.

Would look amazing with gold shoes/or bag.
dress

MarthaFarquhar · 03/11/2009 16:56

I did see the adelaide dress, but found the sequins a bit weirdy in RL. However that might have been because it was surrounded by a fair few monstrous dresses, so I was generally a bit disparaging in Monsoon (although I loved it last season).

Madre - I'm afraid I'm definitly not petite!

OP posts:
Megglevache · 03/11/2009 16:57

No worries. at weirdy.

MadreInglese · 03/11/2009 16:58

oh no, I'm not either, I didn't realise it was petite until after I'd tried it on and was paying for it

MadreInglese · 03/11/2009 16:58

There were some fab Betty Jackson dresses in Debenhams also

AlaskaNebraska · 03/11/2009 17:04

the velvet one
YES too baggy on hem

i can't believe hobbs have a dress called kenwood. surely that is taking the whole home counties frumpiness too far.

Ronaldinhio · 03/11/2009 21:13

I bought the 10 in it and like it well

I. am. not. a. 10

cornsilkwearscorsets · 03/11/2009 21:17
