So having been told (and acknowledged) that long skirts cut on the bias are ageing I have now purchased a couple of short skirts (one black denim, one navy blue).

Now then, black skirt, black tights, black boots is a bit dull, SO do you do matchy matchy with your tights and your top, or is that too try hard and should go just randomly pull out coloured tights from your drawers and sling them on regardless of what is happening elsewhere in the outfit?

no to matchy matchy. But no to random too. I have worn a black dress with purple tights, teal ones, and black t bar shoes. I have also matched the tights to a colour in the dress pattern

heh heh

If I am feeling pert and winsome then I do matchy matchy tights and top or matchy matchy scarf or bangles even; if I'm feeling Ugly McUgly of Ugly Hall then black/black/black is the way I go.

Now was that helpful or wot?

Not matchy but harmonizing, IYSWIM.

Or ones that are neutral in colour but have texture, not fishnets but y'know, ones with holes in ... Like Wolford do. Or M&S

I had been wondering much the same. What's the rules with brown boots, btw? Must you wear brown tights with them? Black ones look weird for some reason.

As Cybil above. I think it would be v difficult to match tights to top if both were monochrome. (And multicoloured tights doesn't quite bear thinking about.)

With brown boots I would wear...dark burgundy, teal, or a natural darkish colour with texture like a knitted ribbed pair or something. Grey can work with brown if its dark enough

Yes coloured tights with brown boots. I love coloured tights and always contrasting colours.

With brown I tend to wear teal, with purple I wear pink.

Sometimes I wear a colour from a pattern in a dress, so I have a brown and pink dress and wear pink tights.

'not matchy but harmonising IYSWIM'

No Dorothea I am not understanding harmonising tights

OK cybil here is my outfit RIGHT NOW

black denim skirt, white long sleeved top, short sleeved plum jumper sort of effort on the top. Now I put on purple(ish) tights to go with the top (and admired myself in the mirror) with black boots. Are you telling me this is WRONG?

baldy, you are always helpful mate.

the rule is don't wear red tights. just don't.

i'm terrible for matchy matchy but have to accept the error of my ways and fight against the internal autopilot that makes me to do it. there was a girl last night in the most amazing shoes, we eyed each other up, we smiled, we acknowledged how fucking cool her shoes were. pink shoes, with plum tights and they looked amazing. think her coat was fawny colour, or perhaps grey. but then she took the coat off and her dress was purple too and all of a sudden it was all too similar and didn't work at all. lesson taken.

I often match tights to a bit of my outfit. So navy skirt, navy tights or brown skirt, brown tights. Looks good i think!

The meaning of life, I think, is dark purple tights.

I am wearing plum/purple tights today with a fawnish coloured dress and brown boots. Have just started the coloured tights thing, also am quite liking the patterend rib effect style tights.

lol at stake's pink shoes eyeings up. How did you hide the disappointment in your face at the not working matchy big reveal?

i don't have masses of coloured tights and would quite probably wear crochet pattern black tights with black mini/boots, or grey/black stripey leggings.

ah there are shades and shades of purple. pinky-purple/plum is divine but anything verging on blue, especially on the more - ahem - mature woman instantly brings varicose veins to my mind at least.

lol slubber i wasn't actually present for the reveal, just saw her again later, and tbh i'd moved on to eyeing up the band by that point

Tomorrow I have a meeting and I'm wearing a little black smocky shortish dress (sweat shirt material) with royal blue long skinny scarfe. The tights are a berry/purple colour and have sort of purpley and pink flowery bits and even a bit of green on them and I'm wearing pink/berry suede shoes. EeeK will I look silly? I'm hoping to look funky

OK

am writing this down, am going on a (much planned and looked forward to) trip to John Lewis this week.

So I need some sort of patterned efforts in black, but nothing in red, or bluey purple.

Teal? teal? hmmmm teal.
