Oh help - what to wear for a party in your own home

It's my 40th in a few weeks and we are having a party at home. No particular theme or anything just friends family and food.

I feel since it's my party I should up the ante a bit from my usual jeans and T shirt but have NO idea what to wear. I feel really uncomfortable if overdressed, never wear skirts or dresses. It seems a bit weird to be wearing boots around the house for seven hours too.

Size 14, 5'3, "hourglass" figure what's left of it, brown colouring (I mean hair/eyes!). I prefer something a bit boho to glitzy looking but worried I will just end up succumbing to an "interesting" top from Per Una and my black work trousers ... save me...

Do you have a budget to buy something new?

So if you won't feel comfortable in a dress why not go for a slightly more glam version of what you normally wear?

So get some new jeans - dark indigo as they're slimming and either straight or boot cut - whichever suits you best.

A new top - is it an all day type party? A nice jumper or a jersey top with a nice boyfriend style cardi over the top?

Nice shoes as you won't be going out and a cool necklace.

Depending on budget go to a shop you like and ask the assistants for help!

Have a lovely party.

It's a tea-time to late party so I'll be doing a fair bit of running about. I can buy something new but not much time to find it! Thanks

I think a top with a sheen or shimer to it UNDER a plain knit/cardigan loose sweater for that " day to evening " look

New, dark jeans.
A pretty silk top.
No shoes - I'd go for pretty slippers but then again I hate shoes worn inside.

Would black or brown velvet jeans be any good? e.g here or just naff? having said that they would need to be bootcut.

I don't mind shoes indoors - pretty slippers! if only! ballet flats probably.

VS I get the idea with the top but possibly not my best colour - nice loose cut though! I might try and contrive a visit to Monsoon ths week.

the consensus allows jeans. I am sure that's what most of the guests will be wearing apart from a few effortlessly stylish ones.

VS I'd have to try it on sometimes jewel colours wash me out (pale). If it is more of a dark teal it might be OK I do gravitate more to red/orange/brown/plum though.

This is pretty - but is nasty polyester instead of silk.

Report
janeite · 18/10/2009 20:31

I like this too but polyester again

Makeup and jewellery no problem.

Janeite those are pretty but won't be good on my ample bosom, I need low neck and some sort of waist even if just a little shaping.

I've got these ballet flats in pewter and they're lovely.

Wrap cardigan over a pretty vest top with said jeans and necklace?
