Hideous experience with mineral make up

Went into Selfridges today and thought I would have a go with this mineral make up that everyone is raving about. Old bat with turkey neck and about two inches of slap made me up. It looked terrible. It clung in clumps to the dry areas of my skin, sucked all the moisture out of my eye area and gave me the wrinkles of an 80 year old (am 44 and have quite good skin - or so I thought!).

Said to the woman that I didn't like it - the first thing I noticed when I looked in the mirror was the crepey eyes, followed by the clumps on my cheeks. It also had a sort of greyish tinge - not remotely flattering. Told her I would see how it went, but by lunchtime, my cheeks were feeling really tight and dry and the wrinkles were digging themselves in deeper and for the duration.

Anyone else had this luck with it?

I struggles with it at first, but it was because I was putting too much on and not buffing it in enough. I use L'Oreal true match minerals foundation and bronzer now and find it brilliant - I wouldn't swap it for regular make up.

The trick is to put a very little on the brush at a time and buff it in well so that it doesn't cake. As supersalstrawberry says you need your skin to be well moisturised too.

I like it because it doesn't run or smudge during the day and you don't get that patchy look that I always get by about 4 pm. I generally favour minimal but professional (my job not my makeup abilities!) make up style and it suits me quite well

Which brand did you use?

Sounds more like a problem with the old hag who applied it than the makeup itself.

I love mineral makeup now and also wouldn't go back to normal stuff.

You do have to tap all the excess off the brush then really rub it in but if applied well it is great.

Am interested in this - went to Laura Mercier counter and spent small fortune but I think that I look like a hag with big pores and a death mask when i use it . How much buffing is buffing iyswim ......

It was Bare Minerals.

Sal - the LM girls always try to get you into a foundation that is slightly too light for your skin tone. You need to be firm with them, or else you will end up with a death mask. Yes indeedy.

i think LM is really over-rated.

yes yes yes, you really need to prep your skin with moisturiser and really buff it onot your face.

I can't get minerals to work either. Surely, if you moisturise and then apply the powder, you just end up with a big cakey mess?

It's great for concealing blemishes, but whenever I've used it over my whole face I end up looking like Miss Haversham (as someone else on here once said)

She did buff. It was like having a floor sander go over my face repeatedly. She did give me a free mascara though, which was nice.

when i first got some i did that, so i stopped using them. for some reason i can't recall, i tried again and it was great.

I moisturise, go downstairs, have breakfast and then do makeup, so it's probably anytthing up to half an hour after i actually put the moisturiser on. I dip the brush in then tap it, then blow it to take off the excess (sounds more complicated than it is) and gradually build it up starting from the outside of my face and working towards my nose and T-zone.

I am the single laziest groomer that there has ever been, so it really is much quicker than it sounds once it 'clicks'

I love my normal liquid foundation from Laura Mercier, honestly the best I've ever had. Shame to hear the mineral stuff is not as good, I was tempted - but thanks for saving me money!

I didn't get on with it either but will admit I might have been doing it wrong. I mix my tinted moisturisers to get the right shade, but haphazardly so I might be a completely slightly different colour every day.

I have very dry skin though and it tends to flake if I'm not careful.

What exactly do you mean by "buff"? (Please explain every step - ie, what you use, how you use it and how long you do it for)

My mineral makeup was dear, so I'd really like to give it another go and get it right.

i'd guess it's not actually that good for dry skin. mine is a bit on the greasy side so in a way it keeps my skin from getting too shiny.
