it's a modern phenomenon, isn't it? It was all rucksacks and shoulder bags in my day

No, thats how HRH holds her handbag, surely?

I do too but I feel v. self-conscious doing it!

When she's photographed at airports with her kids, one of them always has to reach up really high for her hand as she's holding her bag like that!

It's so you can show the design to the paps, innit?

Report
BitOfFun · 01/10/2009 15:41

To elaborate, the slebs get stuff lent to them, but they are asked to allow a good photo of it so walk around like that when the paps are around. Then they go back to holding it normally. Lesser slebs do it cos they are copying and want to look important. And Heat readers think that's a normal way to hold a bag.

Sorry Cybill, but it marks you out as a numpty

Ah, but that's for when your bag has nothing in it but your iphone, ciggys and a pack of anti-depressants/ diet-pills (select as appropriate).

For normal people with purses, filofaxes, moist wipes, crayons and other DC rubbish, I can see tennis-elbow developing!!!! The weight!!!!

i do it with my co-op cloth bag with library books in or it drags on the floor.

Report
ADifferentMe · 01/10/2009 15:47

I do it too - I think it's because bags are so much bigger than they used to be - it's not comfortable to have half a cow hanging off your shoulder or wrist!

Everyone used to carry their bags like that when I was young

I do still a la old woman when I'm wearing a bulky coat.

I always carry my bag like that ever since I started buying little audrey hepburn style numbers.I am a bit addicted to bags like my mum had from the 50's and 60's. So cute

Now Posh is doing it I will have to stop

Good lord - I'd have biceps like Arnie if I carried my bag around like that, what with the amount of shit incredibly important stuff I have to have on me at all times. Shoulders only!

Actually having been frightened by the mirror in the changing room this morning I am more like the Queen Mother.

My image is no longer ironic

I thought that was how people used to carry bags, circa. 1940 to 1960, when miniskirts were invented. I'm pretty sure there's pictures of my grandmother holding her bag like that. It's "retro".

Sorry to go all Someguy on you Bleh, but my fashionista googling says 1966-7 for the mini-skirt...
