oh god, got a nasty shock today

so I was in Sainsbury's with my mum who was somewhat excited by the prospect of 25% off all clothing until Monday...

There was an alright-looking skirt in there ... £20, so £15 after the discount ... very similar to the kind of things you see in White Stuff - brown cord, a-line, to the knee, bit of a flower motif thingy embroidered on the front

So I thought, may as well try it on at home, might look okay with a l/s tee and brown boots, certainly handy for breastfeeding if worn with the right top blah blah

So I grab a 12... and it doesn't do up!!!

okay, fair enough, I had a baby on the weekend but it was still a shock ... anyway, my question is:

do I keep the 12 in the expectation that it will fit in a few weeks?
or buy a 14 to fit now and hope that it hangs in a louche manner on my hips in a few weeks?

WWYD?

Yes keep it, it will fit soon enough. You must have a massive wardrobe.

Keep the 12, its bound to fit after a few weeks.

I was in Sainsburys the other week looking at the kids clothes and MY big shock was a whacking great big spider learching out of a rack of kids jumpers onto one of the assistants. She screamed, I screamed and the woman next to me screamed. Bloody load of jessies that we are! Saved by smirking saturday boy! Think I'd rather have had your shock tbh ( I was nowhere near a size 14 after my DC born).

I can't believe you were in the supermarket Fantastic!And looking at clothes! Mind when ds was born my best freind came round day 2 and I was painting my toenails and she nearly had me certified

I have no fashion pearls of wisdom to add but when the midwife came to visit my cousin the day after having her baby, she was in the stables mucking out her horse.

Buy the 14. You never know how long it will take to return to pre-pregnancy weight or shape. Some people find the weight drops off with bfing, some find that it stays the same and drops off only when they stop bfing.

Buy the 14 and look good now. Why wait?

smugmum - that's so funny, I was looking at my midwife notes from when dc2 was born at the end of 2007 the other day and the day after the birth my notes read: "I arrive to find LTEC putting up shelves"

Much as it would be nice to spend a few weeks wafting about the house, I just can't do it. Not with the other 2 dcs around ... much better that they should be wreaking havoc elsewhere!!!

LTEC - buy the 12 !!!!

it will motivate you to get the weight off!!! and anyway, i'm sure more will drop off without u even trying anyway as you only just had the baby, in my experience the weight kept falling off for about 3 weeks.

and can't believe you were out shopping just days after giving birth, you go girl!!! Lol.

buy the 14, wear it and enjoy it. If it starts to feel loose, it'll still look good, but if it's tight, you'll feel rubbish for too long!

buy the 14 and feel fabulous.

When it starts to feel a little loose no doubt the cold(er) weather will have set in, so will need thick wool tights and with their thick waistband and a tucked in vest (obv with long sleeve tee over top, not tucked in!) skirt will still fit and you will (still) look fabulous.

When it starts to feel too loose and is slipping down your hips, give it to charity and treat yourself to something new. You will feel fabulous on both counts!

must say, I applaud your shopping stamina!

You're a size 14 and you had a baby a few days ago? I wasn't a size 14 nor was I even out in public

You sound fantastic! Have the 14 (which isn't big anyway)and enjoy it. If it does hang off you in a few weeks you could always have it taken in (or get rid as suggested) either way you'll have had some enjoyment from it.

25% off eh?...Hmm must have a look.

I wasn't shopping!! just stocking up on lunchables for the other dcs... and saw said skirt in passing ....

my mum made me do it ... she loves a bargain

I was in maternity clothes for a month after the birth. I wouldn't even have attempted trying on a size 12 even though I was a size 8 before pregnancy.

And kee the 12! Surely you have had enough babies to knwo that it'll fit in a few weeks?

I know, sounds stupid to me now too - think I am suffering kind of hormonal body dysmorphia where my relative ease of movement (compared to the lumbering heifer of a week ago) is tricking me into thinking that I have attained a sylph-like shape overnight. Am over it now, was being an idiot.

princessmel - a boy!! born on Sat 26th, weighed8lb 1oz and called Leon Magnus.

Puppy Monkey - it's not a million miles away from the White Stuff range .. .will upload a pic after the dcs are in bed.

I say go size 14 for now. You deserve comfort whilst looking after a newborn. Your tum will come off, don't pressure youself. Bet 14 looks ace on you anyway.

So this skirt, does it look like the embroidered flower bit would unpick off without leaving obvious damage? What shape and length is it? I am after a plain brown cord and that sounds bargaintastic.

chattermouse - nope, I don't reckon unpicking the embroidery on the skirt is a good idea! I will keep my eyes peeled for a plain brown cord skirt for you
