I'm ashamed of mine practically no nail left on wedding finger, decided I am orally fixated - chew nails, love to eat and a smoker......however my DH would claim I'm not

Oh thank you ladies, at last some support to get me through.

Today I am going to buy a new emery board, which I will carry with me everywhere. Also, some Burts Bees Cuticle balm and a nice natural pink polish.

Wish me luck, will update you later on my purchases.

I've also heard that Sally Hansens 'Hard as Wraps' is meant to be very good, anyone else heard this ?

Yes have used it during brief nail growing phase and yeah it helped the process......always go back to biting though

I can only use hypoallergenic varnish, though, otherwise I get contact allergy on my face wherever I touch... But I think I have some clear stuff upstairs, I'm going to do this today as soon as possible.

The main problem is in not realizing my nails are in my mouth until its too late - its just so automatic!!

Hello! Been busy all day so haven't bitten any so far! Haven't put any varnish on yet as haven't had time but I will do later . Lol at being orally fixated. God help me if I smoked, I'd never be able to give up smoking if I struggle giving up biting nails!

We have 'chewellry' (chewy necklaces) at my school to help children who cannot stop putting things in their mouth... Maybe I should get some and dish it out to you lot

Chewllry sounds good. My problem is that when I stop biting my nails I substitute it by biting the skin around them [iamsoattractive emoticon] and then when the nails get too long to get to the skin I start biting them again.

Hope you don't mind me jumping in on your thread - but I did manage to stop biting my nails last summer (2008) and still haven't bitten them - before that I had been biting for at least 20 years - probably more! And had loads of failed attempts before - so it can be done! Mine are actually quite nice now...

Just in time! I have passed my nail biting habit on to DD (2.9) and am .

As soon as I spotted her doing it I was mortified so had a chat with her and now if she sees me doing it she shouts "STOP" in a very authoratative manner. She's quite effective but is still chewing hers. So, tonight is operation nastynailvarnishbystealth. Both of us shall have it applied, hers when she is asleep

Mine purely through the use of the shouty daughter method have reached a vaguely decent length but have just reached that splitty stage and I can't fine the emery boards I invested in...

robino, DD has also picked up the habit . And very at myself.

decent cuticle cream/balm is the answer to stop those delicious chompy bits around the sides. I tend to rip my cuticle skin with tweezers rather than chomping which is equally barbaric, and revolting

Recommend me a decent cuticle cream/ balm thing then please, Cyb Do hope that's not too familiar! And, ouch, - ripping at your cuticles with tweezers?

Yes yes I know a revolting habit, but better than eating it or spitting it across the room, surely?

My fave cuticle stuf is Burts Bees which comes in a tin. it's not the cheapest but it's nice to sit and watch telly whilst rubbing it into the dry bits!

I think sometimes if I could see how I look when i'm trying to hack that last utterly tempting scrag of nail off it would stop me - I'm literally knuckle deep with my elbow up in the air!
