Style icons

Who are your style icons? Real or imaginary, past or present?
I've aspired to be Audrey Hepburn for years, before finally realsing fairly recently that I will never even begin to look as her as I have the complete opposite body shape.

I like most of what Michelle Obama wears, and I used to try to be like Justine Frischmann from Elastica

I love Nicole Richie

Yes, I'm embarrassed to be typing that but I love that kind of luxe hippy look.

I also love all the young things like the Olsens who can carry off that rolled-out-of-bed scruffy look. At my age I would just look like I lived under a bridge with my pet snake.

I don't really look to celebs for inspiration, really. I get my inspiration from other women in the streets (of London). I'm always interested in what other women with my body shape are wearing, too, as we tall-and-curvy women are quite hard to style. If I had to pick a celeb icon, I'd go for Charlize Theron - she always looks effortlessly great.

oooh Conga....we have shared icons I think the Olsen twins usually look great too.

Audrey Hepburn, Coco Chanel......just beautiful and classic gorgeousness.

Bianca Jagger at the height of the whole Studio 54 thing.

Stella McCartney always looks fab and is absolutely about style over fashion.

Stella McCartney? Are you shitting me? Who told her she looked good in her own range? She designs for lofty rakes with razors for cheekbones - she, herself, is a roly poly little dumpling with a face like a smacked arse...

I think you should come off the fence, Persephoponce

monica bellucci always looks lovely when she steps out in public
i think she is a timeless beauty

but i dont really have anyone i would say i looked to for style and beauty hints, i tend to just take bits from here and there and go my own way

Nicole Richie too (embarassingly), Coco Chanel, Audrey Hepburn and for work wear, Angelina Jolie in Mr & Mrs Smith

maybe roly-poly dumpling with smacked-arse face is the look she's going for..?

Doris Day and Debbie Harry.

Stella always looks like a sack of spuds tied in the middle.

Do you know, I kind of have to agree about Stella. I think her clothes are not for thirty-somethings who have had kids, perhaps.

I wouldn't go so far as to call her a style icon.

But I rather like the way Chloë Sevigny dresses.

I am very impressed by how much Audrey Hepburn fits the Truman Capote written version. And she looks great.

It probably marks me out as a saddo but a lot of the time I love what the Tina Fey character wears in 30 Rock, even though she's supposed to be a bit of a loser. I'm always thinking "Ooh I want that cardigan.. I want that dress."

For high fashion, Thandie Newton always looks amazing but it's not the kind of thing I'd ever have reason to wear...

Also Helen Mirren - she's worn some fab outfits and has that inner confidence that always makes her look stylish.

And from a slightly different angle I LOVE Janet Street-Porter - I love the fact that she always does whatever the hell she likes - in clothes and everything else - and doesn't give a shit and has always managed to be high-powered and opinionated along with it. And also I think she looks pretty cool for someone in her 60s - I aspire to have that attitude as I get older.

ooh I do love Debbie Harry

so cool

I like Gwen Stefani, she has a bit more of a distinct look. A lot of the others all look fabulous, but all blend into one.

I have seen some nice stuff by Stella but I always wonder why she doesn't get a haircut and try a fringe.

Also Carrine Roitfeld (Editor of French Vogue)

If I could look like any mother / pregnant or otherwise it would be Claudia Schiffer without a doubt.

Wheel out the pinafore and turtleneck combos.

I used to be a DM boots/biker boots/short lyrca skrit/ stripey tights type of goth girl. It got to a point where I really needed a change of image. There was a programme that use to be on with Tea Leoni(sp) in it, she was a reporter. She used to wear slouchy trousers and trainers, so I copied her.

My best friend. She is the most stylish person I know, in a completely natural everyday way.

I like the Wardrobe Remix photo group on Flickr, there's loads of inspiration on there for putting outfits together (something I am dreadful at when left to my own devices).
