Is your name on this thread?

Time for a trim then.

I did it slightly differently this time as I didn't want the fringe any shorter, I put in 2 highish bunches at the back of my head and trimmed them.

So come on, sign back in!

Well, maybe you can leave it a bit longer then
It's been 3 and a half months, so a bit late really....

I did it the first time - fab.
Two weeks later had a another go - Derek Jacobi

I did love it but got scissor happy and now I've forgotten where to put the ponytail for best effect.

So about time for a cut, show it who's boss giraffes!

Any 'home hair-cut' virgins...come on, ignore the talk of cadfael and derek jacobi and mullets

You'll look gorgeous, honest! (check out the pics on the thread in OP if you need more persuading)

Ooooh, I just did mine, without having seen this thread first, so it must be time!

I added a few long layers to the back, as it was getting a bit straight and heavy there. I want to get a bit of movement back there, it just hangs straight down otherwise (unless there's even a hint of rain, in which case it FRIZZES! Frizz! Frizz! And then there is nothing I can do with it).

I'm rather pleased with it. I was vaguely thinking I need to get to a hairdresser's just to do a sort of general tidy/shape up, but I think I've just saved myself rather a lot of money, and no doubt (given my previous experiences with hairdressers) a few tears too.

Hurrah for MN DIY haircuts!

I did mine a couple of months ago so it must be due a re-trim. I have to say, though it's the happiest I've been with a haircut for a looong time.

Hurrah indeed!

I know what you mean liath, I like being able to 'fix' it if I'm not 100% happy without having to complain too

Riven, shhhhh I am trying to entice others

Shineon, I managed it so it's not too difficult
I only did mine a couple of weeks ago, so remind next time when my trin is due!
Next time I wouldn't put the front bits of my hair into the ponytail as they came out a bit short and it does rather look like I am growing a fringe out.
But it is masses better than it was.

I wouldn't straighten it first because the result is meant to be a layered sort of look.

I put mine into a ponytail on the top of my head, in the centre as I have a centre parting, and then cut about 6 inches off. I cut to where the sortest bits of my hair already were.
When I took it down, one side was slightly longer, so I did it again to even it out.
Have you seen the youtube video?

Right, I'm going to do it this afternoon! Have been inspired by you all. I just have some questions to clarify things:

So, from what I've read/watched, you just tie a very high pony tail right at the front of your head, and then snip?

And then cut into it to get it feathery rather than just dead straight?

And cut closer to your head the shorter you want it?

And if your stupid very brave, you cut just a few inches from your head so you get a fringe?

This girl ended up having a wonky cut because the pony tail was to one side - but some of you did yours dead centre. What's meant to happen when you do it to one side?

When you do it to one side you are meant to get a sidey fringe. hhmm I just did it and its harder to get right. I reccomend the middle one for first time, its almost impossible to get wrong.

I am a bit unsure about my cut now, ah well its only hair, it will grow!

Just looked at your profile pics. Your hair looks fantastic!

So sad to read about your babies. You must be a very strong woman. I hope it was ok to mention them here - couldn't see your profile and not say anything!

ooh i had forgotten about this. I no longer have 'The MN', i hacked most of my hair off in a fit of extreme depression a few months ago and managed to get in with a trainee last week who did a FABULOUS job of fixing me (for free!)so i have no intention of messing!

Nice job giraffes!
If you want more layers then you need to shop into it more...

First, watch the video.

Second, decide if you normally have side parting or centre before

Put head forward and brush (not too clean as it is slippy) hair into a neat tight ponytail just off your hairline

Cut off the ponytail to the an inch or so longer than the length you want your shortest fringey bit on your face to be.
A good hint for this is to get some of your hair at teh front and wet the bits you want gone, then when it is in teh ponytail cut in the wet bit.

Point your scissors into the short ponytail (at your head) and then snip snip snip, slowly. Don't hack at it, and don't cut too much with each snip. This is where the layers come from so if you hack it 2 or 3 times you will get 2 or 3 layers that will look blocky and silly. so snip snip snip until it is feathery for the last inch or so.

Take out ponytail and preen and preen in mirror

If (like me) your hair is too short at the back to get into the ponytail then do another one on the crown of your head and cut into that, but dont cut this too short or you will mullet your hair. Just take off a bit and snip snip snip.

Don't blame me.
