Wedding: hat or not?

I am going to a wedding in September - wife of the best man so want to make an effort. I've got the dress/shoes all sorted. I've worn hats in the past but every one I've tried on this time just feels wrong - too OTT. I do think hats can finish off an outfit well, so was wondering if a fascinator might do the job instead. Having seen the posts below now I'm not so sure, and I've never had the nerve to try one on. I've also go quite short hair, so would it just be wrong on all counts? Do I just do without a hat at all? What does everyone else do these days?

Not a hat fan either.
I've been to loads of weddings recently and they seem to be few and far between. Older generation seem to still do the hat thing though.
You can get some lovely accessories for hair - slides, combs, flowers in lots of high street shops. I've seen some nice fascinators and also some OTT ones so think you have to be careful.
Have you tried on the outfit with heels, bag, jewellery, make up on etc? If you do that you might find that a hat's just not necessary.
Hope you enjoy the wedding.

Thank you MintChocAddict

I haven't properly tried everything on together. I'm wondering whether one of those alice-band thingys might do the job rather than a fascinator?

I love hats. If you have the right head for a hat then they can look v stylish IMO.

(fascinators are becoming a bit naff I think)

Alice band would be lovely. Lots of different colours, textures, styles in the shops. I always think they look nice with short hair.
Don't rule out fascinators as I've seen some really nice ones and some not so nice ones. Again, might be an idea to try one on with make up on, and possibly wear a top that's a similar colour to your outfit when you're out shopping.
Can you tell I've got way too much time on my hands?

Babbity - I have a huuuuge head and hats sit right on top of my massive bonce so maybe that explains my dislike of them!
I definitely DON'T have the right head for hats but maybe fadingfast does.

I'm very tall so some might think I can 'carry off' a hat, and perhaps I have in the past but I think it's a lot about confidence and I'm just not as confident as I used to be

I do also have a very large head though!

fascinator - you need something as you are wife of best man and all the rellies will expect you to have some sort of headgear. no need for a hat, I would wear one myself though

You can get mini-fascinator thingies that are just on a hair clip - but You do need something
