So, at 5'4", I take it I'm too short for a Maxi dress?

Are you very slim? My curvy friend is about your height and would not be seen dead in one, but if you are very slim, I think you'd look fine.

(thank god I'm tall )

No, unfortunately not very slim. Ah well, back to the drawing board.

Anyone got any suggestions for something to wear to a 40th birthday party?

I think it depends on your frame/build as much as your height.

I'm 5.5 and can't wear them as they just look like lumpy tents.

Well i tried one on and looked hilarious but am 5ft and about to have dc3 in 3 weeks - what on earth was i doing!

However my sister is 5ft 3 (the tall one of the family ) and she looks fab in a maxi dress.

Think you need to try one on - it needs to be not massively floaty and you need wedges with it. And take someone who will give you an honest opinion.

No your not. I'm 5 2 and am going to buy one for my hols and a festival. I've tried some on before and they looked great with some stappy wedges.

ooh I just remembered nbg wore a plain maxi dress last time I saw her, she's 5 3 and she looked FAB. She's lovely and slim though

I'm a fat fecker at 5 3.5 and would look a twat in a maxi dress

I often wonder how normal height people cope with some clothes. I'm 5'11" and I have bought dresses that reach the floor on me (not often - usually I'm lucky if they reach my shins ). But as I am a freak it makes me wonder that anyone bothers to design such long stuff when the majority of women reach my shoulders!

But to the OP, I wouldn't.

Hmm, maybe I'll have to try one one then...

x-posts OrmIrian - I wasn't just being contrary.

Maybe I shouldn't try one on then...

I'm 5ft 4" and slim and can't wear one.

But my Mum is 5ft 1", bigger than me and looks fab in them!

OrmIrian · 01/07/2009 13:59

Nooo try them!

But not if you have to have the bottom chopped off. Would spoil the look I think.

this style could work

I'm only five foot two, so you're going to think I'm very cheeky, but I don't think you should!!!

although sienna miller is also tiny and she carries it off, because she's so slim. so maybe maybe!

it depends on your proportions. You need to try one on and see if it works in a full-length mirror.

I'm the same height as you and I wear them. I think I look perfectly acceptable. I'm a size 10 if that makes any difference at all. Ones with enormous prints don't work on me, but otherwise they're fine.

Remembering back to the 70s when I was little, we had a friend who was a hippy type and quite small. She wore them and looked very lovely.

It's quite hard to find dresses with small prints and prints I think, that don't look too 1950s! and I don't mean 1950s in a cool retro way, i mean like you pulled out of a suitcase under somebody's bed.

Saw some yummy mummies in the park earlier wearing them and they looked fab (they were only average height)

I would look like a sack of spuds in one

I think they suit people with small norks, so probably better for pear shapes... but I am short and just don't think they would suit me, but my 32F norks are not a good look in maxi dresses imho.
