Am I too old for the leggings with long top look?

I have got some money to spend on clothes for the first time in a loooooooong time.

the last time I really bought clothes I was in my twenties and slim.

I am now 35, a size 14 and a bit chubby in my middle, thighs a bit big but rest of legs still okayish.

Will everyone be sniggering behind my back?
go on be honest!

Clure Thu 18-Jun-09 22:05:26

deffo go for it if you've got the legs!

fishie Thu 18-Jun-09 22:09:25

yes of course you can. get good footwear though. what tops have you got in mind?

Lizzylou Thu 18-Jun-09 22:10:48

I am 36, not exactly svelte and do the leggings and long top look. In fact last time I did I had compliments galore.

janeite Thu 18-Jun-09 22:11:16

I am going to go against the grain. I think leggings look pretty bad on most people, whatever their age or size. I'm a size 12 and would not even contemplate them. I might at a push wear footless tights with a dress or skirt but absolutely not leggings and a top.

I'm 34 and wear this kind of thing. I tend to get the leggings that pretty much go down to my ankles as my legs look longer and wear with heels.

Of course you can, I'm 37 and often wear leggings with dresses. You need to experiment with different lengths of both top and leggings to see what works for you.

Noonki Thu 18-Jun-09 22:19:36

Okay, apart form janeite, most people wouldn't die of shock!

where do you all get tops/leggings from (I am a seriously bad shopper, I literally know nothing about fashion blame being a tomboy til I was about 18 grin)

Paolosgirl Thu 18-Jun-09 22:19:36

Leggings and a long top is a great look - just avoid the leggings and short denim skirt look. Not many of the young things get away with this! grin

Noonki Thu 18-Jun-09 22:22:56

cheer for that Paologirl, that would be a step to far!

janeite Thu 18-Jun-09 22:24:30

I wouldn't die of shock - I just think there are much nicer things out there.

Noonki Thu 18-Jun-09 22:27:05

oh Janeite, give me some ideas. i am truely in need of a new wardrobe (I have shopped at jumbles for the last 5 years and have no idea at the best of times what actually suits me...blush

TsarChasm Thu 18-Jun-09 22:29:49

I asked this question too recently here and the answer was yes smile

But I haven't tried it out yet blush

mrsruffallo Thu 18-Jun-09 22:31:16

I have a pair like this that look good with a floaty top or did you mean a short top?

Paolosgirl Thu 18-Jun-09 22:31:20

Help Noonki out here Janeite so I can listen in, please - just turned 40 and in danger of turning to BHS grin

TsarChasm Thu 18-Jun-09 22:31:50

Btw...That's 'yes do it, wear them!' not 'yes, you're too old and everyone will be sniggering'... just to clarify!grin

janeite Thu 18-Jun-09 22:33:15

Oh gosh - now you're asking!

I would go for straight-legged dark jeans I think, with a fitted-ish top that skims over your waist and tummy.

LovelyDear Thu 18-Jun-09 22:36:33

i wear them with almost knee length dresses and i'm 42. lots of my friends do and we all look lovely!

Clure Fri 19-Jun-09 17:21:55

I think something like this would look good with leggings

TaLcYeth Fri 19-Jun-09 17:28:07

Ha! I bought some wet look and some leather look leggings last week... and i'm 38.
Admittedly i haven't worn them least until i've lost half a stone ish...
...and my dds told me NEVER to wear them to the school.

So yes, to answer your question, leggings and long tops are fab.

CliffordtheBigRedCat Fri 19-Jun-09 17:30:54

Janeite speaks sense. Listen to her

Noonki Sun 21-Jun-09 11:59:51

thank you all! I am going to be brave and do the leggings and jeans (as suggested by Janiete.)

I love that top clure.

Where else should I go looking for reasonable priced /nice tops?

janeite Sun 21-Jun-09 16:34:56

This for wearing with jeans and pretty flat sandals/flip flops or some wedges?

Noonki Sun 21-Jun-09 21:40:15

ohhh nice, off to the scary place that is the trafford centre on Weds. I will try that on. thanks smile

JackBauer Sun 21-Jun-09 22:03:06

I wear them and am a size 20. I always get more compliments when I do as opposed to normal jeans and top combo.
I tend to wear them with dresses that are a bit too short for decency, or tops that cover my bum!
