will probably wear a cardie but might go crazy on occasion and take it off.

Go ahead, unless it is very short and tight and suitable only for late teens early 20s to wear. I've got one (am 35 and size 12) it is short ish, with a full skirt, strapless boned bodice but not too tarty IMO. If you feel good in it, go ahead.
