makeup for dark skinned women..need complete makeover

foundation...anyone know of any good foundations for dark women...i dont really want to cake my face with it, just want a thin layer to cover spot/blemishes by my chin


lipstick...at the moment i wear red..it seems that red isnt 'in'...what colour do you use?

eyemakeup....is it dark on eyelids...light above eyelids?

ohhh i so hope someone with dark skin can help!!

sorry can't help, despite my dark skin lol. I stopped wearing makeup when I was pregnant as I was so sick. Will watch with interest because I could do with a make over. Lost my favourite lipstick and it's not stocked any more. Sob!

kama, thanks for that site...it seems to be usa site, im a bit relunctant to order makeup online as you cant always tell the colour from the screen

i have always wore red (not bright red, berry kind of red) and the other day, my cousins informed me that that wasnt the look that was in

but im in a bit of a predicament, dh thinks i need a bit of colour on my lips as it makes me look dull otherwise...and i agree with him..need to find a not so harsher lippy i think...

i really have no idea what sort of colour though

there's a really good column in the guardian saturday magazine called the new black which is basically beauty/hair tips for black women. if you go onto the guardian website & search for hannah poole it should bring up old ones for you to look at.

RTMTMML aint it annoying when they stop stocking the lipstick that took ages to find which suited dark skin! i get that problem all the time

i will read it for all the tips before i venture out to buy foundation...never wore foundation before as i didnt much fancy walking around with a grey face!!! cos thats the colour wrong foundations look on asian women

hiya!! some good co. for this on top of head are:
Mac, bobbibrown(as mentioned), iman i, mariodeluigi . sleek are ok but i would steer away from fashion fair(no offence if you use this anyone)
you say you have assian skin, have you tried using bronzer? body shop do a good one and comes in diff shades.

it is very hard to find a foundation to suit and alot of women of colour get it wrong and try to use foundation to go lighter/darker, some as you say end up looking grey. foundation should blend in and look like you haven't got any on. it should be smooth and even.
make sure you are in good light, natural if poss when you try it out.
dont test on back of hand, test at side of face, a finger up from the chin, test three colours next to each other with a space between each and look at which one matches closest to your skin.
use a sponge/wedge to blend in, using fingers can alter colour because of heat from finger (not so important after you have chosen your correct colour. blend upwards on cheeks, and outwards on and around nose.
finding a translucant or finishing powder can help set foundation but be careful as the wrong powder will undo all the hard work of finding foundation.

as for lipstick, i find the best way forward is not to follow trends in terms of colours. much better to find one that suits you and have it in a finish that is in fashion ie, gloss, shine, matt etc. if you like red go for it and find a shade that suits. i haven't seen your skin or tones so cant really say what will suit but a coral red may suit you.

how about going to a few counters and have a play they should have disposable sponges, brushes etc.

I think MAC do an ok range for darker skins and I seem to remember Maybelline bringing a range out too ?

champs...thanks for that useful advice...i have decided that i will stick to the red and put a touch of gloss on to keep 'with it'..good tip..thanks!

ndp...yeh after reading the hannah poole articles in the guardian (thanks hoxtonchick!) she mentions mac..so will look into that if i cant find anything i like with bobbi brown (or if bobby brown is way too expensive!!)
