I'm going to a wedding, kind of...help me please

Dp has just informed me that for Valentines day we are going to a wedding . Upon further explanation we are not going to the actual ceremony, or the meal but to the dance part. I have never been to any parts of a wedding before. I am completely stuck about what I should be wearing. I own a few dresses, none of which fit into this category. Some are summer/beach dresses and I have one sort of ball gown thing which is black.
I live in jeans, trainers and cardigans and I only own one pair of non flat shoes (I can barely walk in heels).
What am I supposed to wear? What do people normally wear if they are only going to the dance part? I don't want to be over dressed or underdressed.
Size 12-14. Fat stomach, quite large boobs, okay legs, hardly any money. Help!

did he know for ages?
can't beleive you've never been to a wedding before?!
anywa as you've only got to go to the evening bit smart black trousers and nice top would be fine, have you got going out clothes?

I would wear something similar to going to a nice pub/restaurant for a meal. Trousers and top or dress (but not really dressy dress iyswim)

Will have a look at specific outfits if you like ?

You can just wear whatever you would if you were going for a smart(ish) night out imo.

I wouldn't buy anything new for an evening invite (unless I wanted an excuse )

No jeans, but a nice top and smart trousers would be perfectly acceptable.

Thanks for the links Tillyscoutsmum. I think I have to get a dress as I don't have any smart trousers and can't afford to buy trousers and a top.

It isn't your own surprise wedding, is it?

My thoughts, too, Fanjo. Have a rummage in the charity shops, OP: you might find somethng lovely - I would definitely say wear something you look good in, in case of photographs.

No it's not, I hope not at least! They are friends of Dp's. Apparently he's known about this for months. Men! I have found a few dresses on the net that I think would suit me but they are all black. Can I wear black to this type of thing?

What sort of things do you like ? Do you object to Primark ? quite like this

Primark had some quite nice jumper dresses last time I was in.

quite nice too

I don't think I'm brave enough or would feel relaxed in some of those clothes. I need something that won't make me stand out but won't make me look frumpy. I'm going to attempt to link to some dresses to get your opinions.

The first one is more my price range:

Not sure if this one is too dressed up?

This is the type of thing that I like but I don't think it would be suitable for this occasion.

oh my favourite is the top one navy chiffon, very nice.

Tillyscoutsmum · 10/02/2009 15:26

You know - I think any of those would be absolutely fine.

The second one is perhaps a little bit formal/worky - but not too much so. The first is fine but I think the third one would be perfect actually. Its just like an evening party (say a friend's birthday party or something)

The last one is lovely and would be suitable, I think!

Okay, that's great. I'll go into town tomorrow and see if they are in the shops. Thanks for your help.

From the three dresses I posted above I will definitely not get the second one as it's too formal.
I like both the 1st one from New Look and the third one from Oasis.
Now I need some more advice. What do I wear both of these dresses with? I have one pair of black high heeled shoes which have a tiny bit of colour on them. The colour is greeny blue. They will go with the dress from Oasis.
The dress from New Look is Navy Blue. Do Black shoes with a navy dress = some kind of fashion crime?

Also, what would I wear on my legs? Black tights, a different coloured pair? Clear tights?

Help please?!

I think both of those dresses would look lovely, personally I would go for opaque black tights and your black shoes, very in at the moment(think black and navy is fine).
If your feeling brave opaque blue tights with the oasis dress would look good.

squeaver · 10/02/2009 22:58

black and navy is fine so long as it's black tights and shoes.
