London tomorrow

Am taking dd1, 13, to London tomorrow. We both have spending money! Is there anywhere you'd recommend, that we shouldn't miss? The David and Goliath shop is top of her list and Liberty is top of mine (just to drool; I haven't got THAT much spending money!).

Nobody? Is there anything nice in Banana Republic at the moment? Any nice shops in Covent Garden that I should go to?

Fenwick is always worth a look, can have some interesting stuff.

Ooh thank you. Never been there. Where? What sort of stuff please?

Fenwick is on Bond Street. Haven't been for a while but I always pop in - even just to look.

Love Liberty!

Go to Selfridges too - and I agree re Top Shop.

Cos - that's a good one, as we don't have one. What shall I look out for?

We have Selfridges in Birmingham. DD will demand to go to Top Shop. I don't really "do" Primark.

If not just clothes shopping have a look around Fortnum and Mason.

Fab suggestion - where is it please? Haven't been there for about 20 years, when I had somebody to follow!

You might both like Urban Outfitters - on Oxford St near Oxford Circus (towards Tottenham Ct Rd).

I don't know where you live but I don't think Muji is around much outside London - there's one opposite UO

Oh yes, we do like Urban Outfitters; I think there's also one in Covent Garden iirc. We've got a Muji - in fact I was in there earlier this week, playing with Tokyo in a bag etc!

Are there any nice, little non-chain shops possibly? Birmingham has loads of shops of course but they're all the same old same old.

And which museum shall we go to?!

I'd do art - good colourful pics at Serpentine (so you could do the shops at South Ken afterwards with Wagamamas for lunch ?)

or Tate Modern and Rothko and the beds in the turbine hall. Plus food there is great. If sun is out its a nice walk and you could do the Oxo tower for the arty shops. www.tate.org.uk/modern/exhibitions/markrothko/default.shtm

Was there myself last week on my own - supposedly with work but had a whole indulgent morning. Invested in lovely basics in Uniqlo (next to urban outfitters on Oxford Rd).

PS Don't forget sensible bag (for purchases) and shoes for walking...

Had forgotten Uniqlo - the nearest one to us closed down. Do they still do good cashmere?

May go to Tate Modern as dd hasn't been there yet.

They've got some great cashmere in (from £30 in rainbow colours), some fab very fine merino wool for £15 again in mind boggling colours and I also got leggings and laying tops. But was tempted by much more. Don't let scarey fleece stuff on ground floor put you off - its like top shop they put the Sh*t by the doors. Never understand why...

Go to the V&A - it's free!

Fantastic! Okay - first stop, Uniqlo!

Tate Modern then! Are you staying overnight?

Report
janeite · 26/10/2008 19:15

Nope - just going for the day. Dp did a half marathon today and doesn't intend to move tomorrow, so we're leaving him and dd2 behind!

Lunch has to be in Houmus Brothers on Wardour Street because it's dd1's favourite; we will probably have cakes in the crypt at Saint Martin's and pop into the Portrait Gallery for a quick mooch, Oxford Street and Covent Garden for shopping and possibly Tate Modern or The British Museum.

Independent shops tend to be more out of the centre nowadays because of the crippling rents in Westminster. Don't know what kind of stuff your DD is into but Silver Frog on Carnaby St is good for goth type jewellery or Butler & Wilson on South Molton St for costume. And if you're up that way, St Christopher's Place/Marylebone High St have some shops which while they're not exactly independent are not run of the mill either (Agnes B, Descamps, Ronit Zilka, Shoon, Fenn Wright Manson, Space NK etc)

Silver Frog sounds perfect and we'll be near Carnaby Street to go drooling in Liberty.
