I've realised that I'm quite a trendy/cool mum during the summer but when it starts getting cold I turn into a right FRUMP......I hate it, what can I do/buy to make my winter clothes De-Frump???

Links to summer stuff you wear? Eg: if you like cotton A line skirts a la White Stuff etc, then wear them in winter fabrics with knee high boots and cardigans?

Report
iamdingdong · 07/09/2008 20:24

what about white stuff?

LittleBella · 07/09/2008 20:26

I'm the opposite.

Surely you just have coats? Fab black ones fake fur, hats, boots?

Underneath I'm wearing crap, but who sees under my coat?

i could have written this! I also have a varied summer trendy wardrobe, find is easy with summer shoes but as soon as winter turns up ,same old Jeans and frumpy looking ,will be watching this with interest!

wts is quite right, a good coat and great (knee high) boots make you look pretty cool. The trouble is we all usual slouch about in thigh length shapeless sloppy hooded parka things....which absolutely NEVER go with what you've got on underneath!

Me too! The extra half stone I always seem to carry in winter doesn't help. Its the footwear that does it to me too, easy to look nice and casual in flip flops but I always look scruffy and frumpy with flat boots but if I wear a heel I look over dressed.

Get a hat - baker boy or a beret.
Long, thick cardigan (belted) as your coat.
Riding boots with heel and buckles.

I want to join the 'De-Frump' club too! I'm looking for one of those chunky, short sleeved cardigan/shrug things that I can wear with a long sleeved tshirt underneath - anything to stop me giving in and buying another flippin black poloneck jumper!

Ooh I got one in primark OllieWollieWoo, a sort of teal colour, they had them in cream too. Itchy though. Or topshop have got them in too I think.

Its so true, tis easy to look good in pretty summer skirts, floaty tops and flip flops but much harder when you need to dress warmly, winter woolies are not sexy and always seem to add loads of inches.
Agree re good coat and boots plus decent scarves (have bought a lovely plum one with metallic detail from Oasis) but no advice re warm clothing, alas...

OllieWollieWoo -they have a few in La Redoute

Next is really dull.

That is your first mistake.

Skirts with funky clumpy boots. Brightly coloured tights.

layering, Long sleeved t shirts with your summery stuff over. wraps on top of that.

Look at Joe Brown and fat face they do wintery surf girl stuff.

Colour don't stick with grey/navy etc.

Assceorise hats, scarves, scarves with necklaces, short and long nechlaces togetjer, headbands...bangles

Surf girls would have a poncho in winter I reckon.

Great Plains is a good label with some good prints and some nice designs.
White Stuff and Fat Face have warmer things in now though they are often a bit sporty/sloaney - not a good look IMO.
I do think Next is a bit dull/trad.

I am the opposite, I love winter clothes and live in a hot place where summer means a t-shirt or vest and that's all, I find it really boring.

Boots are key, get a good pair you love. In winter you can have fun with layers, scarves, textures like cord, wool and velvet etc. Plus it's much easier to hide the less attractive parts of your body in winter clothes.

Layer layers and more layers!

Winter cardi/shrug thingy update - my sister just got one from (whispers) Matalan - have them in grey or blue - said they had loads in stock on Fri and when she went back on Sat hardly any left!

White Stuff have some nice knitwear too - albeit a bit expensive. Like this
here if you were looking for something non black/navy/grey?

Am also the opposite..also agree, get a good coat - covers a multitude of sins.

Get one that really suits you, fits your shape - then it doesn't matter if you wear something awful under it! Or nothing

Jeans - fitted style best - can be tucked into boots or worn with pumps and socks.

Long sleeved t shirts are good. I wear one or two with a long vest top underneath.

Long or short cardi for indoors.

Big thick socks.

Skirt that is knee length is good too with thick tights.

bringback, I think some bits of next summer stuff is ok, I seem to have all the good bits though.

I rarely get any winter clothes from there though as it really os dull then IMO.

As for some suggestion here, I'm quite an odd shape. Only a size 12 but I can't wear belted cardigans because teh belt ends up under my boobs.
I saw a lovely skirt in the fatface catalogue but its bias cut which always looks shite on me.

I think I need gok

I think surf girl in winter is, in fact, snowboard girl.

Check out Freespirit or Roxy life? Expensive but the quality is fab and I like their snowboard chic thing. Also, if flat boots make you look frumpy and heels make you overdressed, what about a wedge? If you find a nice wedge knee high boot with a square toe - will you let me know?
