Please help me find a "proper" winter coat in the credit crunch!

I give up! I've trailed round shops and sites and can't find a sodding thing that looks like it would be warm enough but isn't going to break the bank.

I'd like something smart-ish, that can cope with temps of up to about -15 (though mostly I'll just be staying indoors those days methinks!), it must generously cover bum/top of thighs, and preferably not over £100.

Does it exist???!!

They have some lovely coats in my local Benetton, from £75 to about £120 I think. I loved all of them.

Just been to their website to get their catalogue. Thanks.

will I look like the michelin man in this?

cupsoftea Sat 06-Sep-08 21:34:45

Not sure!

minorbird Sat 06-Sep-08 21:35:46

I have one of these to attend running club in the winter! Its lovely and snuggly to put on afterwards and everyone is jealous. But yes, I have been called michelin man and alex ferguson hmm

squigglywig Sat 06-Sep-08 21:37:17

Me neither. It looks like I could end up looking like a giant walking puffball. Wasn't quite what I had in mind.

Everyone here wears huge canada goose jacket things. I think that name is right hmm But they are stupidly expensive and huge!!

You know what squiggly that coat looks incredibly warm! Am sure you could order/try it/send back if necessary? Am quite tempted myself because I always feel the cold.

minorbird Sat 06-Sep-08 21:41:32

I also had one when I lived in Manchester. There is only so much cold one can take!

squigglywig Sat 06-Sep-08 21:43:48

It does look very warm you're right. Maybe I should order it and see what it looks like. Maybe it's not as unflattering as I'm assuming....

I refuse to shell out £500 plus for the woolen full length trench coats that are the only alternative to the goose affairs. It's an obscene amount of money!

Always find something at Primark for a very reasonable price..

I'm in Sweden so I can't get to Primark or matalan or anywhere that doesn't have a catalogue online and can deliver. Sorry - should have said before!

I got one of those coats like the Landsend ones 2 years ago from H&M - was pregnant at the time and thought I'd get a cheapish coat to see me thro that winter - I didn't think I would wear it after the pregnancy but I love it - wore it again loads last winter and will do so again this winter! Quality was v good - lovely and padded and I got a knee length one which keeps me toasty even on the really cold days. Plus I'm not worrying about getting mucky when playing with the kids as its wipeable material!

Was worried about looking chunky in it but dont appear to!

Think it was about 40 pounds - mine was black but they had a nice brwon or cream one too.

They had them again last year so maybe will do this year????

M&S just released pics of its new range -- £79 for this coat worn by Lily Cole www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/fashion/article-1052297/As-M-amp-S-unveils-autumn-collection-Liz-Jones-as ks-Has-Marks-finally-got-spark-back.html... no sign of it available on the website yet... apologies for link to Liz Jones article - not sure enven a killer coat can excuse THAT...
