also you'll be able to buy them there in the hypermarket.

we have always had a primark pair for dss but last year he got too big and spent tons on proper speedo ones and then saw them in shop for tiny fraction of cost.

we take 1 naff tight pair and 2 nice floppy shorts for beach AND found our last year's campsite were very relaxed about the 'rule'

How delightfully and hilariously French!

those john lewis ones are VERY french

WelliesAndPyjamas Mon 28-Jul-08 14:08:44

what's the rationale of this rule, then?

flipflopper Mon 28-Jul-08 14:10:25

Is it just the french that insist on this? Ive never heard of it anywhere else. Don t they like the thought of the testicles floating about or something?

Oh i see its so the trunks are for pool only.

I was thinking they liked everything to be neat and compact

overthemill Mon 28-Jul-08 14:12:32

yes but my dd wears her bikini all day long and then jumps in 'clean' pool... silly gender rule, surely?

bellabelly Mon 28-Jul-08 14:16:04

My DH was told he couldn't go in water in South of France wearing his shorts-style trunks. Had to buy skintight ones, he hates them. The explanation we were given was that it's the law in ALL communal pools in France and is because teenage boys lie around in damp shorts all day and it's unhygienic.

Weirdly, it was hard to track down a pair of the right sort in French shops. Would def buy before you go.

cornsilk Mon 28-Jul-08 14:18:12

Is it the same for men then?

Marina Mon 28-Jul-08 14:20:33

Yes it is cornsilk
They don't want anyone in the pool in "clothes" (eg baggy board-short type trunks) that might have been worn all day
They are also red-hot on proper pool flipflops/slides whatever, IME

flipflopper Mon 28-Jul-08 14:20:41

fgs the pool will have chlorine in it, thats what its for.
Gives you something to look at while you are sunbathing though- all those lunchboxes parading around

bellabelly Mon 28-Jul-08 14:21:59

M&S pair for a fiver Not beautiful but ok? Also spiderman ones.

Marina Mon 28-Jul-08 14:22:24

It's more to do with dust/grass/leaves than germs apparently flipflopper
French men wear those hideous microspeedos rather than boxer short type trunks
<marina has flashback to the therapist in thong incident in Curb Your Enthousiasme>

foothesnoo Mon 28-Jul-08 14:22:52

M and s £4 just bought some for ds. he is NOT pleased at the thought of having to wear them!

bellabelly Mon 28-Jul-08 14:24:32

The poolguard woman who explained it to us seemed to be suggesting that it's so the boys don't end up with fungal infections round their crotches, rather than it being for the benefit of other pool-users... But I may have misunderstood cos my French is not the best...
