Anyone lightened their hair colour themselves (not at hairdresser)?

So, the other night I asked whether I should dye my v. dark, newly cropped hair platinum blond. Sadly the concensus was that I'd end up as a cross between Anne Widicome and Jimmy Saville. Yes, I did have nightmares that night!

I do need to go a few shades lighter though. It seems I'll have to bleach the dark brown out and then re-dye it a lighter brown. Having just spent an absolute fortune getting it cut, I'm wondering if anyone has done this successfully at home or am I crazy to consider it?

I have done the opposite - see thread. From the comments there I wouldn't even consider doing it yourself. I have learned by my mistake and will not be doing it again.

Fimbo, I sympathise so much. I'm in a similar situation, years of home dying have left my once milk chocolate coloured hair now looking like the 70% cocoa choc! That was ok as I used to tie it up in a knot all the time , but now I've cut it really short, the contrast with my really pale skin is too much! The colour stripper will turn it orange apparently, then yor can start again with the brown (in theory).

I think the colours turn out way, way darker than in the picture, but it's a bit late for that now.

I have been reading up on this in the last few days, and I think a good hairdresser will be able to fix it. Good luck!

Thank you. I am going to wait until I am my mil's, as I have been to the salon she uses before and know I can trust them! I wasn't that happy with the cut I have anyway so this way I can perhaps end up with a complete overhaul!

My sister did this once and had to spend a lot of money at a salon getting it corrected. Don't do it- unless you want to look like Anne Widicome!
