Style me for a 1940's evening!

So I need an outfit for a 1940s themed evening with a big band.
Am not sure what angle to go for.
I want to look sexy but am concerned that the reality of the 1940's is lots of homemade clothing and dull fabric.

Will definitely need some of those stockings with the seam up the back.

Then there's hair and make up.

Any vintage fans out there who can help?

I am a size 14, big bottom, medium sized boobs, and shoulder length hair.

TIA

hair thus or do side parting and set front and ends on rollers thus
bright red lipstick at centre of mouth

dress
do not button up to neck though

this is the classic primark one from summer 06

and this looks pretty 40s even on the model

ooh ooh ooh, don't suppose it's the one at the Pigalle Club in London at the beginning of August is it? (Probably not, anyway...) I am just in a quandry meself about what to wear to it. Knowing my luck, I'll probably end up looking more like Rosie the Riveter than a glamourpuss.

not rosie

she's great for 1940s days at school but not for dancing

Matt make-up. red lipstick. Fox stole, I presume you have one already in your wardrobe.

Brilliant. Thanks.
I knew you guys would know.

Definitely not doing rosie the riveter. Want to feel beautiful and not be mistaken for the janitor.

The youtube video on 1940s hair posted by mrsbadger was brilliant.

Ok, so a shirt dress. What length of sleeve and hemline should i be looking for?

Can i add a chunky belt or is that too 'now'?

And what sort of jewellery?

Shoes? did they do peep-toe?

I need a book don't I.

1940s fashion book on amazon

do you think it's worth buying this?
it would look rather nice on my bookshelf

dress: ideally a short puff sleeve, somewhere around knee length
wide belt on the waist could work but glam rather than chunky
peeptoes fine, or plain courts, or mary janes, but not sandals
no too much jewellery - small drop earrings, dress watch, possibly a tennis bracelet

this dress might be a little bit short and/or 50s but it is lovely and will look good for other occasions too

that uttam one is a lovely shape on the top, but too short for my chunky knees.

i wondered if old ladies shops would have some suitable stuff? like co-op/dingles?

what's a tennis bracelet?

tennis bracelet is one with stones set all the way round

old-lady shops are never sexy/fitted enough - better to source slightly-40s looking stuff from normal shops

oh yes, very good
(beware bias cut on large arse though)

i'm not sure there's much to be done about my large arse, especially if that's the style of dress needed for 1940's.
A good pair of heels and i think it would look good.

i think the style of that one is good. but a bit concerned the fabric is a bit too plain. is there anything i can do to jazz it up a bit?

it would look good with victory rolled hair i think.

Rokit you can search by decade, if you're looking for the real mccoy.

Dragonbutter · 18/07/2008 11:17

that rokit one showed so much promise then gave me a 1940s dressing gown as the only option.

elizabeths closet
candysays
corsets and crinolines does a nice line in 50s skirts.

this vintage thing is so cool.
i could get into this.
i found that candysays site the other evening when i was googling.
bit expensive though.

have a look at the one i linked in oli.
would you go red or black?
think victory rolled hair, stockings with the seam up the back and some heels
is it working?

someth ing like that would be perfect, cause it has the pencil skirt effect and thne the strapless top is very 40's.

wish i got a chance to wear something like that!
