Period pants!

Sorry if there's a better place to ask this. I'm looking for a pair of period pants to deal with heavy flow. How have others found them? Any you'd particularly recommend?

My daughter has the Modibodi ones and some from Amazon (Innersy brand). The Modibodi are much more expensive and seem to work a bit better, although surprisingly both are quite thick and are visible through leggings. I have some of the Amazon ones and wear them at night to stop leaks, with additional protection so no idea how well they work on their own. My daughter uses pads with them too as she has only recently started her periods and is still getting used to it all. I bought them so that if she forgot to put another pad on she wouldn’t leak everywhere, she had forgotten a couple of times and the pants did hold the leaks well.

WUKA works for me - I have the ones for heavy flow for the first 2 days and the medium after. They work great.

Dd uses the modibodi ones as an extra. The swimming costumes are great too.

Yes we bought a Modibodi swimming costume on sale recently and it’s great- it’s only for light-medium flow but has given my daughter the confidence to swim on her period as she’s only 11 and not ready for tampons.

I use the Wuka ones, they are really good I have worn the medium flow ones (by accident forgot to change) for 12 hours on a very heavy day with no leaks. I wouldn’t recommend the floweret ones, they leak and barely hold anything even on light days.

I’m very annoyed that it took until I was peri menopausal before they reached the shops. An absolute life changing item.

I wear with mooncup, and they remove the constant stress of leakage or flooding on heavier days.

I have the modibodi ones for heavy flow and they are thick but I find them very comfy. I wear them with a tampon at night to stop leaks. DD has them too adn they have been a total game changer for her. She is 11 and was paranoid about rustleing in the loos at primary and these have removed all her worry. We have the swimming costume too. I have also discovered they are brilliant for exercise classes when the pelvic floor is not quite what it was...

I wrote a post the other day about how rubbish the M and S ones are.

The absorbent bit is just the normal gusset in a pair of pants so is not long enough to stop leaks, especially at the front.

I had modibody, but gave just chucked them all out. The wool gave me vulval eczema, which was pure hell.

I bought some Primark, Modibodi and Cheeky Wipes ones recently. Primark ones are thinner so I wore them on my lighter days. The Cheeky Wipes high waisted ones are definitely much thicker and give far more bum cheek coverage, so I wore them on my heavier days with a pad ( haven’t had the courage to go without a pad yet, but my peri menopause periods are brutal - yours may not be as heavy). The Modibodi ones are meant to be brilliant but I got the recycled material ones and don’t like them at all - they are advertised as full briefs but they’re actually high legged so a lot of my bum cheek is uncovered and I felt like I had a wedgie - not what I want when I have my period! Really annoyed as they’re expensive.

M&S ones seem permanently out of stock so I’m goi g to try the WUKA ones after reading about them on here.

Modibodi. Bought some earlier in the month as Miss 11 was due her period whilst we were on holiday. They fit according to her measurements. We bought boy short style undies and a swimming costume, both worked really well.

Can someone please explain these - I seriously can’t get over the thought of walking around all day bleeding in the same pair of pants. I change a pad every time I go to the loo - I have too. How can one pair of pants manage that? How can it not smell? I’ve tried reusable pads and they were like sitting on wet newspaper- are they not the same?

I wouldn’t wear a pair for the whole day - I tend to wear them with a pad to prevent leaking or change them. I wear them through the night, either with or without a pad depending on where I am in my period, but that’s the same as wearing a pad.

I got the M&S ones for DD and she does not rate them by themselves as advertised. She uses an extra pad inside them and she's not that old / not too heavy flow either.

Got Love Luna at Sainsbury’s a few months ago. Delighted with them. I wear with a tampon for heavy flow then wear them alone when towards the end of the period. Change them twice a day if using without a tampon. Great things, make period less of a hassle.

Ah now that makes more sense. The way I’ve read them is you put them on in morning - like you do a normal pair of pants - and just get on your day. Which quite frankly makes me feel a bit green …

Isnt it pathetic that in the 21st century women still have to put up with this disgusting and inconvenient business of which there is no male equivalent? I got so fed up with periods I took the pill for years with no break. Never had a period. When I finaly stoped my periods age 40) never restarted. Hurrah.

I'm with Mrs Pear, I have never quite got the logistics. Have been contemplating them for DD when she starts to save her the hassle (and possible embarrassment) of changing pads at school. But while "bleurgh" at the idea of not changing and sitting in the same blood all day, equally changing pants seems inconvenient - particularly in winter if you are wearing tights, trousers etc. And if you are doubling up pads & pants then the eco friendly aspect is lost.

And one more logistical question - do you pre-soak them before washing? I used washable nappies with all my children. I had a bucket full of water with tea tree added in where all nappies went while waiting to be washed. Did a load of nappies every other day.

I will definitely get DD a swimsuit when needed but trying to better understand the pants.

I certainly didn’t feel like I was sitting in the same blood all day on my lighter days - they sort of wicked it away. I suppose your DD would change them after school so it would be around 7 hours, if she wasn’t wearing a pad?

The doubling up aspect - for me - was about having more confidence around the possibility of leaks. It would depend how heavy your DDs periods are - if they’re light then she might not have that worry.

Re soaking - no, just rinse until clear and then stick in the wash. I’ve read elsewhere that some women take them into their night time ones into the shower with them and I suppose that’s one way of doing it! I use a bio powder on a 40 wash and don’t use fabric conditioner as it affects the absorbency.
