What do stylish people wear on the school run?

I've got a new job and can now do school drop offs and pick ups Smile

After years of pregnancy/toddlers/wearing uniform to work I'm feeling hopelessly out of fashion.

I've definitely missed the veja trainers and wide legged dungarees memo that the other school run mums seem to have received.

Obviously it doesn't really matter but...I would like to fit in more! So, how do stylish people dress on the school run where you are?

Honestly no one gives a toss where I live! Some are on their way to work so in uniform, some are working from home so super casual, some are in office attire.

i live in South East england. SAHMs here have a uniform of either ripped skinny jeans and a tee/jumper with white trainers or work out leggings with a hoodie. Working mums in nice dresses and heels or skirt suits that i could only dream of wearing someday. Dads are a sea of beards in khaki trousers/shorts just do not care Grin

Honestly no one cares and if they do then they probably aren't worth your time.

Wear whatever makes you feel good and works for your life style.

Sometimes I wear jeans and a t shirt or jumper or times a dress/skirt. Although most of the time my outfit is hidden by a raincoat or warm winter coat!

I wear denim shorts, oversized button shirts (cotton or linen), and Birkenstocks a lot at the moment. Or sometimes a shirt dress with Birkenstocks or trainers.

In the cooler weather we were having till recently, I wore straight leg jeans or a dress, chunky 'dad' trainers or lace up ankle boots, with a blazer over the top. Trench when it's cooler again. When it's freezing, I wear an enormous duvet coat thing, so I could be wearing pretty much anything underneath! But it's usually a knit dress, tights and boots or jeans.

I do see a fair bit of active wear on our school run, and also midi dresses with white trainers. Not usually office wear, as people who work in the city (we're near London) tend not to pick up at 3. I do see more business type stuff when I pick up from after school club. Although not so much lately as a lot of people are working from home / dressing casually at work.

What @Winecurestiredness said.

We have some very stylish fash blogger types (love these as I steal their ideas). But mostly just the everyday mix of officewear, activewear and jeans.

Do people really think about this?

I think op is interested in the ones who actually are stylish, as that's what she asked.

But if it's a matter of asking if she has to look stylish for the school run, then of course she doesn't!

I aim for effortlessly chic. Whether I actually achieve that is another matter.

It’s nice to feel stylish even on the mundane school run. Round here it’s quite posh mixed with farmers so wellies or veja but loads and loads of the ordinary mums wear Hush. Hush everything!

I think stylish people don't bother dressing for the school run, because nobody gives a toss.

Stylish people wear things they feel good in and enjoy wearing that work for the day they have ahead.

If you feel you've lost your style, you can book in for a John Lewis stylist session or something, but don't dress for the school run specifically.

Stylish is not about fitting in with the crowd, but finding what suits you and wearing it with confidence.

I wouldn't worry about fitting in. At our school it's a totally random mix of ages and style. Theres not one trend that you could say epitomises a stylish mum. I think school gate style is another imaginary problem invented by fashion journalists trying to get their word count.

Bollocks! I have never known a stylish woman look dated and uncool on the school run cos she doesn't give a toss. There's a way to be comfy and effortless and still be stylish. That's what op is interested in looking like, I'm guessing.

But if it's just a case of fitting in with the general population, as this thread shows, a lot of people don't give a toss what they wear day to day and then bring out the big guns for nights out or whatever. I am not those people, but it's the norm definitely.

SpinbikeNotebook · 19/06/2021 09:04

Well, the norm among some Mumsnetters anyway. The "I don't care about fashion" brigade who you ironically, often find on the S&B board for example.

I suppose it also depends on what you view as stylish, OP.
If you think there arecstylish people dropping off at your school, just look to see how they have putvtheir outfit together. What are the key elements you are seeing, and would those work for your taste / body shape / comfort?

What do you wear the rest of the time? You’re not going to change just for the school run, are you?

I'm not saying people don't look stylish on the school run. I'm saying stylish people don't dress for the school run, because style comes from knowing what you like not what (you think) impresses other people in a 5 minute slice of life.

What I'm saying is that if you want to look stylish on the school run, you need to find your style, not replicate some identikit style for the purposes of impressing people who don't matter.

Lots of chunky DM style sandals at my school at the minute. Pretty much worn with anything.

I’m really pleased to be in a school where I don’t think people care
Just be you
I wear whats nice/comfortable/makes me feel nice for what I’m doing that day (working from home or in office).

The only time I’m Hmm at what people are wearing on school run and notice, is when it’s tipping down and people don’t wear a coat

SpinbikeNotebook · 19/06/2021 09:26

Definitely agree don't copy what everyone else wears. That isn't style, it's a uniform!

But big hairy bollocks to "not giving a toss" about how you look. Maybe that works for some people, but, in the immortal words of Bon Dylan, that ain't me babe. Not saying I'd wear a ball gown, but I dress {buzz word alert} mindfully at all times.

And op has been in uniform for ages so hasn't had time to develop her personal style. No need for everyone to shoot her down because the school run has made her take a look around and feel as if she's missed out on that.

Vohgue · 19/06/2021 09:26

The school run is interesting (for me) because it's predominantly a group of women from my own demographic and age group, with different shapes and styles and you can get a real sense of trends and what looks good.

Be an individual, just be clean, neat, tidy and make sure you drive to an adequate standard and don't park inconsiderately or illegally. Don't become a fashion victim and consider that fast fashion is the second largest cause of climate change.

I’m in a commuter town in the South East ( London borders) but wouldn’t say there is one style that I could pick out. I don’t really see torn jeans anymore and I certainly haven’t seen anyone in heels for a long time. The people I think of as cool are not really ticking off a trend list ( so no summer dresses and vejas ). I guess we have a fair few cropped wide leg jeans and trousers with a variety of flat shoes, longer midi skirts, plenty of shorts on the hot days and the inevitable active wear. It’s all still very casual as I assume people are still working from home.

I live in Range Rover Central and even here, with the exception of a very tiny minority of 1 or 2, nobody makes any sort of effort for the school run outfit wise.
