Colour analysis surprise result - anyone else?

100% convinced I was a winter, had colours done to figure out what the best bits of my winter pallette are, turns out I'm a deep/dark/blue autumn. In autumn colours I don't look like myself, it's very odd, my blue eyes turn hazel. Most of my wardrobe is blue! I always thought I looked like family member A, in new colours I look like family member B.

I did it for a bit of a tweak and refresh and it's provoked an existential crisis Grin

I agree that this is a middle-class, middle-aged thing to do and I can just wear what I want, and I'm overinvested and should give my head a wobble Grin

I was diagnosed as a Winter, can’t remember what variant. I’m a deep soft Summer- not far off, but definitely not the same. White looks great on me but black is awful. They get it wrong sometimes. And obviously you can choose to take it with a pinch of salt.

I have the bonus of looking pretty dreadful in anything. I think my season might be 'post-apocalypse' tbh.

Sounds like you could be a Nuclear Winter Grin

@JackieLavertysWeirdVoice, me too.

I had mine done and although I could see that they suited me, they aren't colours I'd want to wear.

I have a friend who always dresses in winter colours which look nice enough, but I'm always thinking if only the colour of that dress was a bit warmer/more muted it'd look stunning. Maybe you're her :-)

Nuclear Winter sounds about right, @Meripenopause, rocking that sack-tied-with-string look Grin

Part of my problem is that I'm not comfortable with my shape, so I find it hard to focus on flattering colours other than black.

I wouldn't wear 'blue depths' - I'd look like a feral estate agent.

  1. Dont take it too seriously
  2. I had it the other way round, convinced I was Autumn, turned out to be deep/burnished Winter (i.e. nearly Autumn).

I spend a lot of time in hedge-my-bets colours like red, burgundy and dark green. I don't like those bright pinks and blues at all.

How did you have it done, was it outside? I didn't think businesses like that would be able to reopen yet.

I was “diagnosed” as a soft autumn, I thought I was closer to a spring. I struggle with autumn colours so don’t really follow it as they don’t feel very “me”.

I want it done but it’s about £250 now and I blinking don’t want them to get it wrong. Any cheaper options?

Getting your colours done is like doing a Myers-Briggs Personality Inventory. As much use as a chocolate teapot. There are so many exceptions and caveats and things are related (have you noticed how much colour palettes overlap?) that it verges on nonsense. You don’t have to pigeon hole yourself - just hold a colour up against your face and see if it works for you. You don’t need to be a ‘type’. Choose what you like and what works for you.

Ooh these are names I've never heard of before now. I've heard of clear winter etc. But not deep/burnished Winter! Where are these terms coming from?

Fwiw I guess I'm probably autumn but really want to be winter!

While I agree with that about holding up an item to your face to a certain extent; the limitations are that some people can't "see" if it does suit them.

The eye colour thing is key - a group of us had it done 20+ years ago, and to see somebody who normally looked quite drab have their eyes really light up and flash blue was a revelation. If in doubt where the universal teal... :)

I found it really useful. I can’t see what colours are right for me but since I started wearing my season I get more compliments that I’m looking well, and less about my clothes so I think it’s working.

It took a while to embrace certain colours which struck me as a bit “old lady” because they were staples of my grandma’a wardrobe. But they’ve since had a fashionable period so that helped me get past my hang ups.

Not at all! In many ways style is substance and is part of claiming your place in the world with confidence. No need whatsoever to pooh-pooh it!

I can't remember which season I am, but I remember looking at the colour pallette and thinking half of them really suited me, and the other half I wouldn't be seen dead in.

So it needs to be in line with your taste too!

'Nuclear winter' lol Grin
Duvet yes, that's probably me Grin The more saturated winter colours did seem too strong, I wondered if I was a sprinter.
I don't think they got it wrong, in the new colours I look like a different person, which I hadn't anticipated. 90% of the new colours are the ones I actively avoided and thought were draining, I see now that my usual clothes gave me more colour - bluer eyes, pinker cheeks - but almost made me look feverish.
When I was 10 I was told for the first time that my father had a daughter from an earlier marriage and she came to meet the family. She looked like us but with slightly different colouring and there's an echo of that in this experience, my face is the same but different. No one is more surprised than I am, I thought it was going to tell me my best shade of blue, not make me wonder who I am Smile

Exactly! I presume it’s the people who can’t tell what colours suit them that need advice on, well, what colours suit them Grin

Ninka thanks for that, I have been feeling a bit lost at sea (perimenopause I think, and ageing in general, and some personal upheaval in the last few years) and I was trying to address that loss of confidence. I've always had a very strong sense of style and strong preferences and I feel the loss of that compass. I'm not taking this exercise particularly seriously, it's just that it has been surprisingly emotional.

Sarah it's a bit like having your tarot cards read, even thought you think it's woo and nonsense it might really reach into you in a way you don't expect. It's certainly not a science or a diagnosis or whatever, more of a creative tool maybe.

lego funny you say that, it's my gran's eyes I see in the mirror now, but I've always thought I had my mum's colouring.

I went to the dentist today wearing olive (a colour I always avoided) and the receptionist complimented me on my outfit. Voodoo!
