Have boilersuits had their day?

Hallo,

I bought the most beautiful boilersuit from Finisterre, it's really well made and very flattering.

finisterre.com/collections/womens-trousers-shorts/products/pennan-zip-coverall-organic-cotton-black?variant=32850959597645

But - I'm wondering if they have had their day really. I'm not particularly trend driven, but it's not cheap. What do you think?

I think they essentially have, but I accept that might be subjective. I don't often see them on people out and about and don't own one. Nothing specifically against them but to me that looks very utilitarian to the point of it having mechanic/tradesperson vibes. I can't see the appeal at all and would never wear it but am happy to accept that's my bad/differing taste -the reviews seem very positive!

As always with these things if it's comfortable and you feel good in it and/or it's something you can get a lot of wear out of for the price tag then it's worth keeping IMO. Cost per wear and all that.

I have no strong feelings about them either way. I've never seen anyone wearing one in real life and all the ones I've seen online have, in my opinion, had 'plumber coming to unblock your sink' vibes going on.

They look like exactly what a tradesman would wear, painter plumber etc, I have also never seen one in real life and suspect this is the reason why.

I've just bought the same one and I love it, so am adamant they are not over. It looks amazing with a pair of mustard Airforce One's, although my DH did compliment me on my romper suit!

The fact that two of the uber trendy young female baristas in my local independent coffee shop have both recently been wearing boiler suits supports my thinking on this.

I think they look great, you have to have a certain amount of style to attempt to wear them I suspect as whenever I've seen anyone in one (always arty/creative types) they look amazing.
I would wear one, but they don't flatter my stomach area and I can't be bothered with the toilet undress every few hours.

No way I love them , I wear with trainers and like the utilitarian look . I never really follow high fashion though and wear what I like .

The Finisterre one looks terrific. I want one.

What's the rear like, @thetrees? Patch pockets?

I've got one, haven't worn it in a while as it's neither loungewear nor work wear, but every time I wear it I get compliments on it.

Hmmmm I don't know. I think that one looks reasonably timeless / inoffensive. It could almost pass as jeans and a shirt. Would I pay £125 for it...? No, I don't think I would right now, as, it's the sort of thing which would be a pain in cold weather as you would have to take off any outer layers and remove the top half to use the loo! I remember this with dungarees when I was heavily pregnant in wintertime. You'd freeze every time you went to the loo!

So, I'd leave it till spring, but possibly I'm being weird focussing on the loo aspect too much Blush.

Dungarees look so cute over a bump but not ideal when you need the loo all the time.

I wear dungarees a lot because of all the pockets but things tend to fall out when i go to the loo.

If you love it, buy and wear regardless of what's 'in'. That's how I use the endless cycle of fashion now, keep an eye on it until it comes up with something I like.

That is the king of boilersuits! I really like them and wore an army green Lucy and Yak one today. I am fairly utilitarian though.

Exactly @MikeUniformMike! So cute. They also were very practical over my bump, as I couldn't get trousers to stay up on me when I was pregnant. I have quite narrow hips, so everything just fell off. Dungarees were amazing as the straps held them up with no digging in. Shame about the cold though.

They're not really a faff with going to the loo as you leave the straps fastened. you need to wear a jumper underneath them not over them.
I have the L&Y ones and Gap denim ones. So practical, and as I am quite short I feel they make me look taller.they probably make me look like a wrinkly giant toddler

I do like the boilersuit.

I love that boilersuit. think if you put a tan belt on it, it would tone down the mechanic vibe!

What's the rear like, *@thetrees*? Patch pockets?

I just checked, one patch pocket. They are extremely flattering

Thanks OP. It looks lovely. I want one. Unfortunately I never seem to go anywhere now. I'm tempted to order one though.

Thank goodness they don't have my size!

If it's flattering, there's your answer.

I really like it, it just wouldn't suit my shape at all.

I wear a boiler suit ... at work in the engine room ... it's definitely still vogue down here 🤣

I love them and the only impact that being “in” has is that you can actually find them to buy. There’s a woman called Cathirae on Instagram with such a strong look and she wears them. I wear mine with trainers or Birkenstock’s but I might try with DM shoes.

I'm 5ft nothing with a huge arse. Boilersuits are not for me. Tall and willowy women look fab in them.

I think they're still fine and the one you ordered is lovely!
